The research, titled ‘Leveraging AI for Mental Health Care,’ explores how AI can simulate, analyze, and ultimately enhance mental health care journeys, leading to improved access, personalization, and outcomes for individuals from various backgrounds.

The core of the study involved an AI-generated case study focusing on Marcus Johnson, a 24-year-old Black software developer residing in Atlanta. This case study meticulously modeled the intricate interplay of personal, cultural, and systemic factors that influence access to mental health care. The analysis integrated established frameworks such as Andersen’s Behavioral Model, Penchansky and Thomas’s Dimensions of Access, and Measurement Based Care (MBC) to systematically identify barriers, facilitators, and opportunities for data-driven intervention and tailored care.

The findings demonstrate that generative AI simulations, especially when combined with MBC, possess a remarkable ability to replicate real-world complexities in mental health scenarios. This capability is crucial for informing clinical decision-making and personalizing interventions through continuous assessment, symptom monitoring, and collaborative planning. The study specifically highlights telehealth, flexible scheduling, and cultural competence as critical elements that can be significantly bolstered by AI to bridge existing access gaps and improve overall patient outcomes.

This work is lauded as one of the first to synthesize leading access-to-care models, MBC, and generative AI to simulate and enhance mental health care pathways.
