The global landscape of technology infrastructure is undergoing a profound transformation, propelled by the insatiable demand for Artificial Intelligence. This AI revolution is fueling an unprecedented surge in data center growth worldwide, with Mexico strategically positioning itself as a key player in this expansive market. The boom is characterized by increased investments in infrastructure and technology, fundamentally reshaping the data center industry to accommodate the immense computational and energy requirements of AI workloads.
Mexico’s data center sector has witnessed remarkable growth since 2019, with Querétaro and the Bajío region solidifying their status as primary development hubs. Major tech giants such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google, and OData have already made significant investments in these areas, fostering a robust ecosystem of at least 15 companies within the sector. According to a study by Ciena and Censuswide, a striking 43% of new data centers in Mexico are projected to be dedicated to supporting AI workloads, underscoring the country’s commitment to this technological frontier. Experts in Mexico anticipate at least a six-fold increase in bandwidth demand over the next five years, driven by the need to transmit vast volumes of data for AI model training and inference, processes that necessitate a highly robust and scalable infrastructure. Globally, 87% of respondents believe that bandwidth of 800Gb/s or more per wavelength will be essential to meet interconnection demands.
However, this rapid expansion is not without its significant challenges, particularly concerning Mexico’s energy infrastructure. The Mexican Association of Data Centers (MEXDC) warns that access to sufficient energy and a lack of coordinated efforts across government levels could jeopardize projected investments. The industry estimates that an additional power supply of at least 1,200MW will be required over the next five years to meet demand, a formidable challenge given that current capacity stands at approximately 300MW. To achieve the ambitious goal of 70 new data centers by 2029, an estimated investment of at least US$8.8 billion in electricity infrastructure will be necessary, according to MEXDC. This highlights the urgent need to update the regulatory framework and enhance coordination among authorities to ensure a favorable investment climate.
Beyond energy, the environmental impact of these energy-intensive facilities is drawing increasing scrutiny. A single AI-focused data center can consume as much electricity as 100,000 households, and by 2030, their overall energy consumption could surpass Japan’s current annual consumption, as per a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Communities are beginning to resist the proliferation of these centers, campaigning against issues such as water extraction, toxic emissions from energy sources, and a perceived lack of accountability from governments and tech companies. A 2024 investigation by Context in Querétaro, Mexico, revealed that local governments are incentivizing the construction of water-hungry data centers in a drought-stricken region, with companies like Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., and Google LLC often being less than transparent about their water usage for server cooling. Hanna Barakat, a researcher at Computer Says Maybe, noted, “In the absence of information, it’s often up to community members to do this task of requesting documentation, doing investigative journalism trying to fact check a lot of these green-washing claims.”
Globally, the AI data center boom is also prompting innovation in sustainability. Liz Henderson, global head of Aon’s Climate Risk Advisory, stated, “The advance of AI is a catalyst for problem solving that is necessary to increase grid efficiency.” This includes exploring new cooling technologies, sites that can perform computations when power is cheaper and more sustainable, and alternative energy sources like hydrogen and nuclear. For instance, Meta Platforms Inc. reportedly requested proposals for 1 GW to 4 GW of new nuclear capacity in the U.S. to power its AI operations.
