AI-Powered Documentation Automation Tops Physicians’ EHR Improvement Priorities for 2026 Amid Rising Burnout, Black Book Survey Reveals

TLDR: A recent Black Book Research survey indicates that physicians are urgently prioritizing AI-powered documentation automation to address critical Electronic Health Record (EHR) issues, aiming to combat escalating clinician burnout and enhance operational efficiency. This comes as manual documentation consumes up to half of a physician’s daily time, making AI a key solution for 2026.

NEW YORK CITY, NY – A new Q2-Q3 polling by Black Book Research, released on July 11, 2025, highlights an urgent call from physicians for significant improvements in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. The survey, which polled 274 physicians and healthcare practitioners affiliated with U.S. hospital health systems, underscores the critical need for enhancements to combat escalating clinician burnout rates, which currently affect nearly 55% of hospital-affiliated physicians.

The survey asked participants to identify their single most critical EHR improvement area to immediately boost clinical efficiency and patient care. Topping the list, with 37% of respondents, was AI-Powered Documentation Automation. Physicians emphasized the transformative potential of intelligent automation, noting that manual clinical documentation can consume up to half of their daily time. Leveraging artificial intelligence to streamline this process is seen as a crucial step to alleviate workload pressures and improve clinician satisfaction.

Following AI-powered documentation, the second-highest priority, cited by 26% of participants, is improving Interoperability and Seamless Data Integration. Respondents reported ongoing challenges, with 63% experiencing weekly delays or difficulties accessing critical patient information across disparate systems. Enhanced data-sharing capabilities and adherence to interoperability standards are deemed essential for reducing clinical inefficiencies and supporting high-quality care coordination.

Clinician-Centric User Experience (UX) Redesign ranked as the third priority, chosen by 17% of respondents. Practitioners stressed the necessity for intuitive, physician-driven design, as 72% stated that current EHR interfaces significantly contribute to workplace frustration and fatigue.

Other key areas identified for improvement include Enhanced Clinical Decision Support (CDS) tools, prioritized by 12% of participants, reflecting a desire for fewer but more relevant alerts. Mobile and Device-Agnostic Access was selected by 7% of respondents, highlighting the growing demand for flexible EHR platforms, especially given that 80% of physicians regularly access patient data remotely. Finally, Rapid System Responsiveness, chosen by 4%, points to frustrations with slow EHR system performance, with 51% of physicians experiencing productivity-impacting lag time or downtime at least monthly.

The survey also revealed strong expectations from physicians regarding EHR vendors, with 78% anticipating significant system improvements by the end of 2025. Doug Brown, Founder of Black Book Research, commented on the findings, stating, “Physicians have clearly articulated the areas where EHR systems continue to hinder rather than help. Addressing these top concerns, particularly documentation automation and interoperability, is critical not only to reducing clinician burnout but to ensuring consistent and high-quality patient care. EHR vendors and healthcare IT departments must swiftly respond to these priorities to maintain clinician trust and satisfaction.” The findings underscore a clear mandate for the healthcare technology sector to innovate and adapt to the evolving needs of frontline clinicians.
