TLDR: Fireworks AI, a startup specializing in AI inference workloads, has secured $250 million in a Series C funding round, elevating its valuation to $4 billion. The company plans to use the capital to expand its team, acquire more GPUs, and enhance its platform for deploying and fine-tuning large language models.
Artificial intelligence inference startup Fireworks AI Inc. has reached a significant milestone, announcing a $4 billion valuation following a recent $250 million Series C funding round. The funding was led by prominent investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Index Ventures, and Evantic, with existing backer Sequoia Capital also participating. Notably, industry giants Nvidia Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc., and Databricks Inc. were among the new investors, underscoring the strategic importance of Fireworks AI’s technology in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
The company’s core offering is a high-performance platform designed to assist enterprises in deploying and fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) for specialized tasks. This platform provides access to cloud-based infrastructure optimized for running AI inference workloads at scale, offering features like on-demand access to specialized graphics processing units (GPUs) and other AI accelerators with per-second pricing. Fireworks AI also provides discounted access for bulk inference workloads, making large-scale deployments more cost-effective.
Lin Qiao, co-founder and Chief Executive of Fireworks AI, revealed in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that the newly acquired capital will be strategically deployed to fuel growth. The company intends to hire over 150 new AI researchers and engineers, as well as scale its sales and marketing teams. A substantial portion of the funds will also be allocated to purchasing additional GPUs for its cloud platform. Qiao articulated the company’s ambition to build “the best tool chain to help application developers build towards the next level of quality, speed and cost.”
Qiao, a recognized figure in the AI community and one of the creators of the open-source PyTorch framework during her tenure at Meta Platforms Inc., stated that Fireworks AI currently employs around 115 individuals and has recently achieved an impressive $280 million in annual recurring revenue.
The timing of this funding round is particularly noteworthy, as the AI industry’s focus is increasingly shifting from AI model training to inference – the process of running trained models to make predictions or decisions. Gartner Inc. analyst Chirag Dekate highlighted to the Journal that AI engineering demands highly specialized skills in integrating AI models with new datasets and inference platforms, a talent pool currently in short supply. Dekate noted that “roughly 80% of enterprises are yet to get to this advanced stage.”
Despite facing competition from other AI inference startups like Baseten Labs Inc. and Together Computer Inc., as well as major cloud infrastructure platforms, Qiao expressed confidence in the future. She believes that the necessary skills for AI inference will become more widespread over time.
