TLDR: A new report reveals a dramatic increase in AI-written law firm reviews, with a 1,586% surge since ChatGPT’s launch in 2022. In early 2025, an estimated 34.4% of online law firm reviews were AI-generated, posing significant legal and ethical challenges for the industry.
The legal industry is grappling with a new challenge as artificial intelligence increasingly infiltrates online review platforms. A recent report by Originality.ai, a company specializing in AI-generated and plagiarized content detection, indicates a staggering rise in AI-written reviews for U.S.-based law firms.
According to the report, released in April, the volume of AI-generated law firm reviews has skyrocketed by an astonishing 1,586% since the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022. This surge highlights a growing trend where AI tools are being utilized to create online content, including professional service ratings. The study further estimates that in the first few months of 2025 alone, approximately 34.4% of all online law firm reviews were likely authored by artificial intelligence.
This dramatic increase, as noted by experts, could introduce considerable legal and ethical complexities for law firms. The authenticity and reliability of online reviews, which often influence potential clients’ decisions, are now under scrutiny. The proliferation of AI-generated content raises questions about transparency, misrepresentation, and the potential for manipulation of public perception.
To conduct their comprehensive study, Originality.ai leveraged the RapidAPI application to collect a bulk sample of approximately 5,000 Google business reviews of law firms, spanning from 2020 to 2025. This extensive dataset was then meticulously cleaned and analyzed using Originality.ai’s proprietary detection tool to identify reviews with a high probability of being AI-generated.
Madeleine Lambert, Director of Marketing and Sales at Originality.ai, acknowledged that while some generative AI tools existed prior to ChatGPT’s debut in 2022, the study found that the rate of AI-written reviews was notably low before that period. The post-2022 explosion in AI capabilities, particularly with large language models, appears to be the primary driver behind this significant shift in online review generation.
