AI-Generated Music’s Growing Dominance Threatens Human Artists’ Livelihoods and Listener Engagement

TLDR: The music industry is grappling with the escalating presence of AI-generated tracks, which are rapidly saturating streaming platforms. This influx is diverting listeners and profits away from human artists, leading to significant financial losses and a diminishing sense of community within the digital music landscape.

The digital music landscape, once hailed as a democratizing force for artists, is now facing an unprecedented challenge from the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence-generated music. Reports indicate that streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are becoming ‘drowned in music spam’ as generative AI models churn out thousands of tracks at an alarming rate, often ‘hundreds of times faster than a composer.’ This phenomenon, dubbed ‘bitspam,’ is directly impacting human artists by siphoning off listeners and, consequently, their much-needed profits.

Artists are increasingly finding themselves in a precarious position, losing out on royalties and contracts as their human-created content struggles to compete with the sheer volume of AI-generated material. A significant concern is the difficulty in distinguishing between tracks created by live authors and those by neural networks, leading to a ‘nameless’ experience for listeners. Musician Mia Eden lamented this shift, stating, ‘It used to be that if you listened to someone on Spotify, you were almost certainly on their Instagram or chatting on Discord. Now everything is nameless.’ This erosion of connection is pushing some artists to abandon platforms altogether.

The financial repercussions are stark. Alex Reade, an artist performing under the name Project AER, witnessed a dramatic decline in his monthly Spotify listeners, plummeting from 2 million to less than 500,000. This translates to a substantial loss of income, as 2 million streams previously yielded approximately $7600. Reade’s experience highlights a troubling trend where algorithms appear to favor AI creations over ‘a real emotional product,’ causing artists’ incomes to ‘literally melt away.’

Beyond just overwhelming the platforms, AI-generated music is also being used in more deceptive ways. Instances have emerged where fake tracks are attached to real musicians’ profiles, impersonating artists and redirecting streams and income to scammers. The ‘Sweet Enoughs’ case illustrates how phony tracks, despite being on an artist’s profile, carry different Spotify codes, ensuring every play and dollar flows to the scammer, not the legitimate artist. Such incidents can lead to artists losing playlist placements, algorithmic reach, facing copyright claims for their own music, and even losing fans due to the perceived poor quality of these AI-generated additions. Spotify’s response to such issues has reportedly been to attribute them to ‘mapping glitches.’

The ease with which AI-generated music can be produced and distributed further exacerbates the problem. Scammers utilize cheap or free software to mass-produce tracks, then upload them to streaming services via low-cost distributors. They often create fake artist profiles and AI-generated artwork, compiling playlists filled with this ‘slop.’ A critical issue identified is the absence of a mechanism for listeners to filter out AI-generated content on platforms like Spotify, meaning users are likely unknowingly consuming AI music in their daily playlists. This lack of transparency and control underscores the urgent need for platforms to implement robust measures to protect human artists and ensure fair compensation in an increasingly AI-dominated music industry.
