AI Agents Poised to Revolutionize Stablecoin Liquidity and Market Efficiency, Says Paxos Labs Co-founder

TLDR: Paxos Labs co-founder Bhau Kotecha suggests that autonomous AI agents will become key drivers of liquidity in the stablecoin market, transforming fragmentation into an advantage by directing funds to the most efficient issuers. This perspective is echoed by Galaxy Digital CEO Mike Novogratz, who anticipates a surge in stablecoin transactions as AI agents handle everyday financial tasks.

The stablecoin market, now exceeding $300 billion following clearer regulatory frameworks in the United States, is on the cusp of a significant transformation, according to Bhau Kotecha, co-founder and head of Paxos Labs. Kotecha posits that the next wave of stablecoin adoption will be spearheaded not by human users, but by sophisticated AI agents capable of autonomously managing and moving digital assets.

Addressing the prevalent concern of market fragmentation across various stablecoin issuers and jurisdictions, Kotecha views this challenge as a ‘double-edged sword.’ While fragmentation traditionally risks ‘creating liquidity silos and user confusion, which can hinder adoption,’ he believes AI agents offer a powerful solution. These autonomous programs, designed to make decisions and execute tasks like trading or fund transfers without human intervention, are expected to ‘switch instantly’ to whichever stablecoin offers the most favorable economics. This dynamic, Kotecha explains, means ‘fragmentation isn’t necessarily a deterrent; it can actually become a market-level optimizer, where AI ensures liquidity flows to the most efficient issuers. Over time, this could compress fees and force issuers to compete on fundamentals.’

This sentiment is reinforced by other prominent figures in the cryptocurrency space. Mike Novogratz, CEO of Galaxy Digital, stated in a September 2 Bloomberg interview that AI agents are projected to become the primary users of stablecoins, leading to an ‘explosion of stablecoin transactions’ in the coming years. He envisions a ‘not-so-distant future’ where AI agents manage routine purchases, such as a ‘grocery agent that knows your diet, preferences and budget and can automatically fill your cart,’ utilizing stablecoins for these transactions instead of traditional payment methods.

Companies are already moving to capitalize on this vision. Cloudflare, a global cloud infrastructure firm, announced on September 25 its development of ‘NET dollar,’ a stablecoin specifically designed to support instant transactions by AI agents. The increasing adoption of stablecoins in corporate treasury and cross-border payments further underscores this trend, with over 25% of customer invoices at Fireblocks reportedly settling in stablecoins in 2025, driven by CFOs seeking faster settlements, reduced foreign exchange risk, and improved liquidity management.
