TLDR: Adobe has officially launched its highly anticipated Generative Extend feature in Premiere Pro, leveraging generative AI to allow video editors to seamlessly lengthen video and audio clips, fill gaps, and smooth transitions. This innovation, powered by the Firefly Video Model, aims to significantly enhance editing workflows and is now generally available, supporting 4K and vertical video.
Adobe has introduced a groundbreaking generative AI feature, ‘Generative Extend,’ into its industry-leading video editing software, Premiere Pro. This new tool, which moved from beta to general availability in April 2025 with Premiere Pro 25.2, is designed to address a common and frustrating challenge for video editors: clips that are just slightly too short or gaps in the timeline that are difficult to fill .
Powered by Adobe’s Firefly Video Model, Generative Extend allows users to instantly add extra frames to video and audio clips by simply dragging the edge of a clip in the timeline . Premiere Pro’s AI then automatically generates new, photorealistic frames that seamlessly match the existing footage, effectively lengthening the clip beyond what was originally captured in-camera . This capability is particularly useful for covering video or audio gaps, smoothing out transitions, and holding shots longer for perfectly timed edits, offering unparalleled flexibility in timeline adjustments without sacrificing quality .
The feature supports 4K resolution and vertical video, making it highly versatile for various production needs, including social-first content creation . While in beta, it initially worked best with 1920×1080 or 1280×720 resolutions, a 16:9 aspect ratio, and frame rates between 12 to 30fps, but its general release has expanded capabilities . For audio, Generative Extend can extend clips, though it cannot create or extend spoken dialogue, and music clips are not eligible due to copyright considerations . The process involves cloud processing, with the AI analyzing every frame of the video clip to generate the extension . Users can regenerate content if not satisfied with the initial AI-generated extension .
Alongside Generative Extend, Adobe also announced other significant AI-powered advancements at NAB 2025. These include ‘Media Intelligence,’ an AI clip search tool that empowers editors to find relevant clips from terabytes of footage in seconds by automatically identifying and tagging visuals like people, objects, locations, and camera angles . Another notable addition is ‘Caption Translation,’ which instantly localizes captions into 27 languages, streamlining global content distribution . Furthermore, Premiere Pro’s color management system has been enhanced, automatically transforming log and raw footage to SDR and HDR upon import, eliminating the need for manual LUT application .
