Academic Integrity Under Scrutiny: The Growing Trend of AI Use Among Students

TLDR: A recent report highlights the increasing reliance of university students on generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini for academic assignments. Over half of students are now using AI for assessments, citing efficiency gains. However, educators express concerns about the potential long-term impact on critical thinking and essential skills.

The academic landscape is undergoing a significant transformation as a growing number of students are turning to artificial intelligence tools to complete their coursework. A report from Dazed, published on July 9, 2025, sheds light on this escalating trend, revealing that more than half of students now utilize generative AI for their assessments, according to a 2024 survey by the Higher Education Policy Institute.

Students like David*, a postgraduate student at the University of Leeds, exemplify this shift. David, 22, openly admits to regularly using AI bots such as Grok and Gemini to assist with his assignments. He has achieved consistently high marks, often in the ‘high 60s or low 70s,’ and even scored an impressive 81 on a recent assignment, despite ‘blatantly’ using AI. David explains his method: ‘Once, I uploaded the assessment brief and relevant lectures, then had [Gemini] make me an essay structure which linked the question back to the brief and lectures.’ He also leverages AI to refine his writing, stating, ‘I would write out a paragraph and then ask the bot to make me sound more coherent and add any other relevant points in.’ He then manually tweaks the AI-generated content to ensure it sounds human.

For David, the primary motivation is efficiency. He asserts, ‘It’s just way more effective time-wise. I can do more research and make better quality work in my view.’ This sentiment reflects a broader adoption of AI since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, with the technology now being used for a wide array of tasks, including academic work.

However, the widespread integration of AI in education is not without its controversies. Experts are increasingly vocal about the potential downsides, warning that an over-reliance on these technologies could stunt the development of crucial skills such as critical thinking, memory retention, and language proficiency. The rapid rise of AI in higher education prompts urgent questions about its appropriate role: should students embrace chatbots for efficiency, or does their use ultimately erode fundamental learning capabilities essential for long-term intellectual growth?
