ABB and NVIDIA Partner to Advance Gigawatt-Scale AI Data Center Power Solutions

TLDR: ABB and NVIDIA have announced a collaboration to accelerate the development of next-generation, gigawatt-scale AI data centers. The partnership will focus on pioneering advanced direct current (DC) power technology and solid-state electronics to create highly efficient and scalable power delivery systems essential for the escalating demands of artificial intelligence workloads.

Zurich, Switzerland – October 13, 2025 – Global technology leader ABB has officially announced a strategic collaboration with NVIDIA, the accelerated computing pioneer, to drive the evolution of next-generation AI data centers. This partnership aims to accelerate the development of gigawatt-scale computing infrastructure, addressing the rapidly increasing power requirements of artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. The core of this initiative is the innovation and deployment of cutting-edge power solutions designed to ensure high-efficiency and scalable power delivery for future AI operations.

The research and development projects will specifically support NVIDIA’s anticipated introduction of an 800 VDC power architecture, intended for 1-megawatt server racks. Achieving this level of efficient power delivery necessitates significant advancements in power distribution technologies and architectural design. Future data center power architectures are expected to integrate a medium voltage (MV) uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with direct current (DC) power distribution directly to the server room, utilizing advanced solid-state power electronics devices.

Giampiero Frisio, President of ABB Electrification, emphasized the company’s leadership in this critical area. “ABB is leading the development of the key new power distribution technologies that will create the next generation of data centers,” said Frisio. “We have been an early investor in the cutting-edge UPS, DC and solid-state electronics that will enable data centers to stay ahead of AI’s growing power demands.” He further added that this collaboration, supporting the development of 800 VDC architectures, is a testament to ABB’s commitment to engaging with the data center community to meet the needs of this dynamic market.

ABB’s extensive portfolio for data centers already includes intelligent power distribution systems, robust backup power solutions, and digital monitoring tools, all crucial for ensuring continuous operations and optimizing energy consumption for AI servers. The company dedicates approximately 40% of its scientific research in electrification to areas vital for next-generation data centers, such as electrical architectures, protection devices, DC distribution, and advanced cooling systems. A notable recent innovation from ABB that supports the data center industry is HiPerGuard, recognized as the world’s first solid-state MV UPS.
