Netflix Pivots to AI-Driven Advertising and Enhanced Engagement for Future Growth

TLDR: Netflix is strategically shifting its focus from subscriber numbers to leveraging interactive advertising technologies and artificial intelligence to drive growth, enhance viewer engagement, and diversify revenue streams. The company reported a 17% year-over-year revenue increase to $11.51 billion in Q3 2025, despite a one-time $619 million tax expense in Brazil impacting profits and share price. AI is being integrated across content creation, user experience, and advertising to optimize performance and foster innovation.

Netflix is undergoing a significant strategic evolution, moving beyond its traditional focus on subscriber growth to prioritize innovation in advertising, artificial intelligence (AI), and real-world ventures. This pivot was highlighted during the company’s third-quarter 2025 earnings call, where co-CEO Greg Peters stated Netflix is ‘now squarely in the ‘walk’ phase’ of establishing the fundamentals of its diversified business.

For the July-September quarter of 2025, Netflix reported a robust 17% year-over-year increase in total revenue, reaching $11.51 billion. Net income climbed 8% to $2.5 billion. However, a substantial one-time tax expense of $619 million in Brazil led to the company’s share price falling by 10% on the day of the announcement. Despite this, co-CEO Ted Sarandos noted that Netflix now serves nearly a billion viewers globally, though specific subscriber numbers were not disclosed.

A cornerstone of this new strategy is interactive advertising. Peters revealed that Netflix’s in-house technology will soon support interactive ads, allowing viewers to directly engage with campaigns. The company is also exploring similar interactivity in live programming, with plans to introduce real-time voting features for its expanding slate of live shows and events, potentially debuting with the revival of ‘Star Search’ in 2026. Netflix aims to test, iterate, and innovate on dozens of AI-driven ad formats by 2026, with its first-party ad tech platform, Netflix Ads Suite, already deployed across all advertising markets.

Artificial intelligence is central to Netflix’s growth ambitions, extending across various facets of its operations. The streaming giant is delving deeper into generative AI to boost efficiency and creativity, from content localization and dubbing to personalized viewing recommendations. AI tools have already been utilized in designing sets and wardrobes. Furthermore, AI is being employed in the advertising business to test new ad formats, generate relevant ad creatives and placements for members, and accelerate media planning.

Co-CEO Ted Sarandos addressed concerns about AI replacing human creativity, emphasizing that ‘it takes a great artist to make something great. A.I. doesn’t automatically make you a great storyteller if you’re not [one].’ He positioned AI primarily as a tool for creative enhancement rather than a replacement. Netflix has also rolled out a new AI-powered TV interface to 85% of devices, reporting results that exceeded pre-launch expectations, further solidifying AI’s role in enhancing user experience and content discovery.

The ad-supported tier, launched in late 2022, has achieved significant scale across 12 markets, contributing to a 22.2% year-over-year increase in revenue from sales and marketing to $786 million in Q3 2025. Netflix anticipates more than doubling its ad revenue in 2025 and projects a Q4 operating margin of 23.9%, a two-percentage-point improvement year-over-year. The company’s strategic shift underscores its evolution into a broader tech and entertainment powerhouse, leveraging advanced technologies to drive future growth and engagement.
