TLDR: Lookout, a leader in marine artificial intelligence, has been awarded the 2025 National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) Innovation Award for Marine Electronics at the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition & Conference (IBEX). The award recognizes Lookout’s advanced AI vision system, which integrates with a Coast Guard-certified navigation light to provide an all-in-one solution for hazard detection and enhanced situational awareness on the water.
Lookout, an innovator in artificial intelligence for maritime safety, has been bestowed with the prestigious 2025 National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) Innovation Award for Marine Electronics. The accolade was presented during the recent International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition & Conference (IBEX), with the news officially released on October 21, 2025. This annual award program by the NMMA celebrates outstanding new products that showcase significant advancements in technology, design, and safety within the marine industry.
The winning product, Lookout’s AI vision system, is a groundbreaking solution that seamlessly integrates advanced AI vision cameras with a Coast Guard-certified navigation light. This innovative combination creates a singular, all-in-one device designed to simplify installation while providing continuous hazard detection. According to Judge Steve Mitchell, a respected marine electronics reviewer for publications like Panbo, 48° North, and SeaBits, the system ‘simplifies installation while delivering always-on hazard detection – spotting vessels, debris, and wildlife for unmatched safety on the water.’
Lookout’s technology is engineered to address critical safety concerns, specifically targeting operator inattention and limited visibility, which the U.S. Coast Guard identifies as leading causes of boating accidents. The system is versatile, applicable to a wide range of vessels, from 20-foot wakesport boats to 65-foot cruisers, thereby enhancing safety for both recreational and commercial marine activities. It utilizes sophisticated AI algorithms trained to automatically identify and track various marine hazards, including buoys, floating debris, logs, other vessels, and marine wildlife.
Data from the AI camera is displayed directly on popular multifunction displays (MFDs) from manufacturers such as Garmin, Raymarine, Furuno, and Simrad. The interface presents real-time hazard data through augmented video overlays or a novel 3D aerial view, reminiscent of advanced automotive systems like those found in Tesla vehicles. This intuitive visualization significantly improves situational awareness for operators, day or night, fostering increased confidence and better decision-making.

David Rose, CEO of Lookout, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, ‘We’re honored to be recognized among so many innovative products. What customers love about Lookout is simplicity. Boats already have sonar, radar, AIS, cameras, and charts, but they’re all in separate displays. We bring those sources of truth together into a single, intuitive view that’s easy to understand. This award validates that the industry sees the value in that integration.’ The integration with Lumitec, a marine lighting leader, for the navigation/anchor light further underscores the system’s commitment to optimal performance and federal compliance, as both the camera and light require top-of-mast placement for maximum range.
