TLDR: Toy giant Mattel has announced a groundbreaking strategic partnership with OpenAI, aiming to integrate artificial intelligence into its beloved toy lines and enhance internal operations. This collaboration seeks to redefine play experiences, with the first AI-powered product expected to be unveiled later in 2025, though widespread market availability is anticipated further down the line.
El Segundo, CA – Mattel, the global toy powerhouse behind iconic brands like Barbie, Hot Wheels, and UNO, has officially announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research and deployment company. This landmark partnership marks OpenAI’s first venture with a global toymaker, signaling a significant shift in the toy industry towards AI-driven innovation.
The core of this alliance is to explore and develop new toys and experiences that leverage advanced AI capabilities. While specific product details remain under wraps, a small team in California is already in the early stages of development. Mattel anticipates announcing its first AI-powered toy in 2025, though it is widely expected that these products will not hit store shelves until a later date.
Josh Silverman, Mattel’s Chief Franchise Officer, emphasized the transformative potential of this collaboration. “Each of our products and experiences is designed to inspire fans, entertain audiences, and enrich lives through play. AI has the power to expand on that mission and broaden the reach of our brands in new and exciting ways,” Silverman stated. He added, “Our work with OpenAI will enable us to leverage new technologies to solidify our leadership in innovation and reimagine new forms of play.”
Beyond product innovation, the partnership also extends to Mattel’s internal operations. The company plans to integrate OpenAI’s advanced AI tools, including ChatGPT Enterprise, into its business processes. This integration is aimed at enhancing product development, fostering creative ideation, and boosting overall team productivity and company-wide transformation at scale.
Brad Lightcap, Chief Operating Officer at OpenAI, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. “We’re pleased to work with Mattel as it moves to introduce thoughtful AI-powered experiences and products into its iconic brands, while also providing its employees the benefits of ChatGPT,” Lightcap commented. He highlighted that Mattel will gain access to an advanced set of AI capabilities and new tools to enable productivity, creativity, and company-wide transformation.
A central tenet of this partnership, as stated by Mattel, is a strong emphasis on innovation, privacy, and safety in all age-appropriate play experiences. This commitment comes amidst heightened scrutiny from digital rights advocacy groups. Organizations like Public Citizen and Fairplay have voiced concerns, drawing parallels to Mattel’s past experience with ‘Hello Barbie,’ a doll pulled from shelves in 2017 due to privacy vulnerabilities. Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, urged Mattel to reconsider incorporating AI into children’s toys, citing potential risks to social development and the distinction between reality and play. Mattel, however, maintains that it will only integrate new technologies in a ‘safe, thoughtful, and responsible way.’

This move is part of Mattel’s broader digital strategy, which includes investments in gaming and interactive experiences. Notably, Mattel had previously partnered with Adobe’s AI ‘Firefly’ software for toy packaging design. The current collaboration with OpenAI, however, delves deeper into the core product experience, with Mattel retaining full control over its intellectual property and character direction, co-developing products that use generative AI for storytelling, interactivity, and in-game experiences.
