Developed by Capgemini in partnership with World Rugby and Opta, this innovation will debut at the tournament, marking the first instance of generative AI being utilized at a Rugby World Cup. The technology is designed to deliver live match analysis and contextual insights, significantly enhancing the viewing experience for millions of rugby fans worldwide.

TryZone IQ aims to support commentary teams by providing real-time match data, enabling them to offer instant, concise information that enriches viewers’ understanding of the game as it unfolds. The system continuously updates historic and live match data, including intricate details such as player actions, team dynamics, and overall match statistics, processing these inputs every minute. Its generative AI engine then transforms this complex data into brief, informative, text-based summaries, which rugby analysts can leverage to supplement their live commentary.

Steven Webb, UK Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Capgemini, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative. “As women’s rugby reaches new heights and the World Cup draws global attention, we felt there was a unique opportunity to apply innovation to make the game more engaging for a broader fanbase,” he stated. “With TryZone IQ, we’re infusing the transformative power of generative AI into the heart of the game to meet the expectations of fans today who are looking for real-time stories, context, and clarity as they follow the sport.”

Crucially, the technology is built on a foundation of human-AI collaboration, ensuring that human analysts retain editorial control over which insights are broadcast or shared across digital and social platforms. This approach ensures that the AI augments, rather than replaces, the expertise of human commentators.

TryZone IQ will also introduce two innovative on-screen visualizations to further engage audiences. The “Expected Tries” feature adapts statistical methods similar to football’s ‘xG’ metric, illustrating to viewers how many try-scoring opportunities are being created versus actual tries scored in a match. Another feature, “Attacking Threat,” converts live metrics like possession, territory, and momentum into an intuitive on-screen power bar, allowing audiences to quickly grasp which team is currently dominating play and is most likely to score.
