Singapore’s retail landscape has taken a significant leap into the future with the grand opening of FairPrice Group’s (FPG) ‘Store of Tomorrow’ at Punggol Digital District. Launched on August 28, 2025, this pioneering supermarket is touted as the world’s first generative AI-powered retail space, a vision brought to life through a strategic partnership with Hanshow, a global leader in digital retail solutions.
The ‘Store of Tomorrow’ serves as a dynamic testbed, committed to piloting more than 20 new digital retail solutions annually over the next three years. These innovations are designed to reinvent the consumer shopping journey and optimize store operations across FPG’s extensive network of over 570 touchpoints, which engage more than a million customers daily.
At the heart of this futuristic store are cutting-edge technologies that promise a hyper-personalized and seamless shopping experience. Key features include AI shopping assistants, which offer real-time product recommendations, recipe suggestions, and in-store promotions. Digital price tags (ESL) from Hanshow enable dynamic, real-time price and promotion updates, ensuring accuracy and flexibility for store teams to adjust pricing multiple times a day.
Shoppers can utilize ‘Smart Carts’ equipped with tablets and eight cameras, guiding them through the store with in-store mapping and flashing electronic shelf labels to pinpoint products. These smart trolleys also provide conversational shopping assistance. Automated discount applications at checkout streamline the purchasing process, while digital ‘endless’ aisles extend product offerings beyond physical shelf space.
Beyond the customer-facing innovations, the store leverages Vision AI to continuously monitor stock levels, alerting managers to low inventory and triggering replenishment. A ‘Grocer Genie’ dashboard provides staff with live updates on operations, weather patterns, and customer needs, enhancing operational efficiency. Interactive zones further enrich the browsing experience, with wine shelves offering tasting notes and baby and electronics aisles featuring QR codes for detailed product information.
The impact of these technological advancements is already evident. Since its launch, the flagship outlet has seen the average shopping basket size grow from S$25 to S$45, demonstrating the effectiveness of its AI-driven personalization and convenience.
Vipul Chawla, Group CEO of FairPrice Group, emphasized that the ‘Store of Tomorrow’ vision extends beyond merely ‘wowing’ customers with novel solutions. He stated, ‘it is about harnessing the power of digital innovations like gen AI to deliver on FPG’s purpose of making every day a little better for those it serves, by being easy on the wallet, experience, and planet.’ This commitment underscores FPG’s dedication to adapting and staying ahead of evolving consumer needs through technology.
Hanshow’s role as a trusted technology provider has been pivotal, delivering integrated digital store solutions, including ESL and in-store marketing tools, across all key consumer touchpoints. This collaboration aims to connect online and offline channels, fostering a truly omnichannel environment and transforming each product zone into an engaging, experiential destination.
Despite this technological leap, FairPrice remains steadfast in its 50-year-old mission of keeping daily essentials affordable, a purpose established during Singapore’s oil crisis. The group has also invested in training its workforce, with an average age of 54, through a ‘Growth Mindset’ program to embrace change and learn from challenges.
