TLDR: Workday has launched new Workday Illuminate™ AI agents designed to significantly streamline and optimize complex workflows across human resources, finance, and various industry-specific tasks. These purpose-built agents aim to deliver measurable business outcomes by embedding AI directly into core processes, moving beyond fragmented automation efforts. Alongside the new agents, Workday introduced Flex Credits, a new subscription model offering flexible and scalable access to its AI innovations.
SAN FRANCISCO – September 29, 2025 – Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ: WDAY), a leading provider of enterprise cloud applications for finance and human resources, has announced a significant expansion of its Workday Illuminate™ platform with the introduction of new AI agents. These purpose-built agents are engineered to transform core business functions within HR, Finance, and various industry sectors, promising to deliver faster, more confident, and measurable value from artificial intelligence.
The announcement, made during Workday Rising 2025, highlights Workday’s commitment to embedding AI directly into workflows, addressing a common industry challenge where many AI investments fail to yield substantial returns. Gerrit Kazmaier, president, product and technology at Workday, emphasized this point, stating, “Too many AI efforts amount to random acts of automation that never scale or deliver real value. The barrier of self-building AI on legacy systems and closed platforms is simply too high. Workday Illuminate is different. With purpose-built AI agents and a single, open enterprise platform, we’re redefining ERP for the AI era – transforming it from a passive system of record into a system of action that drives real outcomes.”
The new Illuminate agents are designed to tackle some of the most complex and time-consuming processes. For Human Resources, new agents aim to create better employee experiences and reduce administrative burdens. These include the Business Process Copilot Agent, which automates the setup and configuration of new HR processes; the Case Agent, streamlining routine case activity; the Document Intelligence for Contingent Labor Agent, accelerating Statement of Work (SOW) creation and contract alignment; the Employee Sentiment Agent, analyzing feedback at scale for actionable insights; and the Job Architecture Agent, automating job ladders for clearer career paths. The Performance Agent also analyzes employee feedback and performance data from various enterprise applications.
In Finance, the new Illuminate agents are set to streamline reconciliation, testing, and planning. Key offerings include the Cost & Profitability Agent, which uses natural language to define allocation rules and drivers for sharper margin insights; the Financial Close Agent, automating close steps and providing real-time visibility to shorten timelines; and the Financial Test Agent, continuously testing transactions and controls to detect anomalies, support compliance, and flag issues early. These agents are designed to simplify cost and profitability setup, automate the financial close process with real-time visibility, and test financials to help detect fraud and enable compliance.
For Industry-specific workflows, Workday is introducing agents like the Academic Requirements Agent, which automatically creates academic requirements for educational institutions, and the Student Administration Agent, automating administrative tasks for students and providing intelligent assistance.
Workday’s existing AI agent portfolio has already demonstrated significant impact. The Financial Audit Agent has reportedly saved early access customers up to 900 hours per year by automating evidence collection and reporting. The Payroll Agent enables compliance up to four times faster, and the Planning Agent has cut data exploration and analysis by 30%, equating to approximately 100 hours per month, for early access customers. The Contract Intelligence Agent has also shown to reduce execution time by 65%.
To facilitate broader adoption and flexibility, Workday is also launching Workday Flex Credits. This new subscription-based consumption model provides built-in access to Workday’s AI and platform innovations, allowing customers to scale their AI usage at their own pace without complex tier structures or hidden costs. Flex Credits are available for purchase immediately, while the new Illuminate agents are expected to be available in 2026.
