German Prosecutors Raid Northern Data AG, Intensifying Scrutiny on AI Cloud Sector

TLDR: German investigators have conducted raids on Northern Data AG, a Frankfurt-listed AI cloud company backed by Tether Holdings Ltd. The reason for the raids, which occurred on September 26, 2025, has not been officially disclosed, but the event highlights growing regulatory scrutiny at the intersection of digital assets and emerging technologies, particularly within Europe’s burgeoning AI infrastructure industry.

German prosecutors have confirmed that raids were carried out on September 26, 2025, in connection with Northern Data AG, a prominent Frankfurt-listed technology firm. The company, significantly backed by stablecoin issuer Tether Holdings Ltd., has been actively transitioning its business model from cryptocurrency mining to focus on artificial intelligence (AI) computing and cloud services. A spokesperson for the Frankfurt-based prosecutors’ office confirmed the raids to Bloomberg News, stating that more details are expected to be released on Monday, September 29, 2025. The specific reasons for the investigation or what investigators were seeking have not yet been disclosed.

Northern Data AG has positioned itself as a key player in the European AI infrastructure landscape. The company manages over 22,000 AI chips across its facilities in Europe, with its flagship European site located in Boden, Sweden. In a strategic move earlier in July 2025, Northern Data reportedly entered a deal with the state-backed Abu Dhabi AI firm G42, agreeing to provide G42’s cloud computing arm access to half of its extensive AI chip capacity. This deal underscores the company’s commitment to its AI computing pivot.

The raids come shortly after a leadership overhaul announced on Monday, September 23, 2025, where Chief Operating Officer John Hoffman was promoted to co-chief executive officer alongside Aroosh Thillainathan, a move framed as part of the company’s growth strategy. Following the news of the raids, Northern Data’s shares experienced a significant drop, plunging as much as 12% to €16.48 before recovering slightly to be down 8% in Frankfurt.

This is not the first time Northern Data has faced scrutiny. In 2024, the company was subject to allegations of fraud, misrepresentation of financials, and tax evasion by two former directors. While these claims were later withdrawn and the case dismissed, the episode highlighted potential governance weaknesses. The prosecutor’s office has not indicated whether the current investigation is linked to these past disputes, financial reporting, tax compliance, or entirely new matters.

The raids are seen as a significant event for firms operating at the intersection of digital assets and emerging technologies. Tether Holdings SA, itself a subject of ongoing regulatory questions regarding its reserves and disclosures, could face further reputational challenges due to its association with Northern Data. The incident also sends ripples across Europe’s AI infrastructure industry, which has attracted billions in investment from both governments and private funds. Should prosecutors allege financial improprieties, it could establish a precedent for stricter oversight of companies that combine cryptocurrency origins with next-generation AI computing, adding to the uncertainty for market participants.
