TLDR: Bernstein analysts predict that the emergence of billions of ‘Agentic AI’ systems will fundamentally transform industries and work processes. These autonomous AI agents, capable of performing complex, multi-step tasks, are expected to move beyond human assistance to autonomous action, posing a significant disruption, particularly to service economies like India’s.
A recent analysis by Bernstein analysts, published on Investing.com, highlights the impending revolution driven by ‘Agentic AI.’ The firm projects that billions of these autonomous AI agents are set to redefine how work is conducted across various sectors, marking the ‘next frontier of artificial intelligence disruption.’
Bernstein’s research, conducted ahead of its ‘AI vs Human’ conference, involved an assessment of over 100 Agentic AI startups. The core distinction emphasized by the firm is that while large language models (LLMs) have garnered significant attention, ‘Agentic AI is the space that translates their immense potential into autonomous action.’ These sophisticated systems are already demonstrating capabilities in ‘multi-step, complex tasks like scheduling/prioritizing patients basis urgency after a conversation, booking tickets or assisting radiologists with diagnosis.’
The report notes a striking imbalance: ‘for a few hundred LLMs (handful of really large ones), we have millions of agents seeking employment today.’ This proliferation of agents is poised to automate tasks that are currently low-stakes or back-end focused, moving beyond simple human assistance. Approximately 80% of the reviewed startups are based in the U.S., with a notable presence of Indian founders and substantial operations in India.
However, the burgeoning Agentic AI sector is characterized by intense competition. Industries such as healthcare, sales, and customer service are already ‘heavily crowded by chat and voice agents.’ Meanwhile, the IT and finance sectors are witnessing a broader application of these agents, ranging from ‘code generators to trade forecasters.’

Bernstein issues a cautionary note regarding the potential societal impact, particularly for economies heavily reliant on services. The firm warns that Agentic AI ‘threatens a major disruption among the low-lying fruits of India’s services economy,’ identifying IT, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), and sales jobs as facing the ‘greatest replacement risk.’ This suggests a significant shift in the global labor market as these autonomous agents become more prevalent.
