The announcement, made on September 27, 2025, highlights Oracle’s commitment to evolving its database offerings to meet the growing demands of AI-driven applications.
At the core of MySQL AI are its new vector store and search functionalities. These features allow enterprises to build sophisticated retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) applications directly on MySQL, bypassing the traditional requirement for separate vector databases. This integration streamlines development and deployment, making it easier for organizations to leverage their existing MySQL infrastructure for cutting-edge AI applications. The platform also includes seamless integration with leading large language models (LLMs) and offers AI-powered query acceleration, alongside leveraging in-database analytics to optimize workload performance.
Nipun Agarwal, senior vice president of MySQL engineering at Oracle, emphasized the practical applications of this new technology. “MySQL AI enables a number of on-premise agentic workflows such as financial fraud detection for bank transactions stored on your servers, monitoring of store inventory and forecasting demand for goods, travel bookings for customers, to name a few,” Agarwal stated. He further added, “You can develop AI applications accessing data from the MySQL database or file system without requiring data movement or complex integrations, with the option to migrate the same application to MySQL HeatWave in the cloud.”
The new AI Engine within MySQL AI is comprised of four key components:
Generative AI: This component allows users to extract accurate and contextually relevant information from documents stored in local file systems.
Vector Engine: Developers can utilize this to create vectors from documents and store them efficiently in a vector store within InnoDB, MySQL’s primary storage engine.
AutoML: This feature automates common machine learning training tasks, including algorithm selection, data sampling, feature selection, and hyperparameter optimization, simplifying the development of AI models.
NL2SQL: A text-to-SQL functionality that uses LLMs to enable developers to query database content using natural language, significantly lowering the barrier to data access.
