TLDR: Wolters Kluwer Health has launched UpToDate Expert AI, a new generative AI-powered clinical decision support solution. Designed to provide clinicians with fast, reliable, and evidence-based answers to complex medical questions at the point of care, the tool leverages a unique ‘Clinical Intelligence’ approach, drawing on the expertise of 7,600 medical professionals and UpToDate’s vast, peer-reviewed content to ensure accuracy and prevent AI hallucinations. It will be available to select North American users starting in October 2025.
Wolters Kluwer Health, the parent company of the widely used clinical research and information database UpToDate, has officially announced the launch of ‘UpToDate Expert AI.’ This groundbreaking generative AI-powered clinical decision support (CDS) solution is set to redefine how medical professionals access critical information, offering rapid, reliable, and evidence-based answers to clinical questions directly at the point of care. The announcement, highlighted by Rik Renard, marks a significant advancement in integrating artificial intelligence responsibly into healthcare workflows.
UpToDate Expert AI distinguishes itself from other AI tools primarily focused on administrative tasks by venturing into the high-stakes realm of clinical decision support. Dr. Peter Bonis, Chief Medical Officer of Wolters Kluwer Health, emphasized in an exclusive interview with Newsweek that the company has spent ‘many, many years’ anticipating and answering clinicians’ questions with the best possible information from experts. This new tool is poised to be a ‘bomb’ on competitors, according to one family physician, due to its robust capabilities.
The core of UpToDate Expert AI lies in its ‘Clinical Intelligence’ framework, which emulates how expert clinicians reason and act. It leverages the collective knowledge of Wolters Kluwer’s extensive network of over 7,600 medical experts across various specialties. Crucially, the AI model is closed off from the broader web, drawing exclusively from UpToDate’s vast library of peer-reviewed, expert-authored literature. This controlled environment is designed to eliminate the risk of ‘hallucination,’ a common concern with general-purpose AI models, thereby ensuring the trustworthiness and reliability of the information provided. Users will receive context-rich responses with single-click access to the underlying assumptions, sources within UpToDate, and the step-by-step rationale behind each answer, fostering transparency and allowing clinicians to quickly validate recommendations.
Greg Samios, CEO of Wolters Kluwer Health, stated, ‘With UpToDate Expert AI, we are responding to our customers’ needs to apply the speed and power of GenAI for reliable, trustworthy medical answers while adding value into the enterprise workflow.’ He further added, ‘We’re committed to supporting enterprise needs for transparency, compliance, and governance.’

The solution will initially roll out in October 2025 to approximately 250,000 users in North America, specifically select UpToDate Enterprise Edition customers, with general availability expected to follow. This phased approach underscores Wolters Kluwer’s commitment to a measured and responsible integration of AI. The company also plans to demonstrate UpToDate Expert AI at HLTH USA 2025, scheduled for October 19-22, 2025, at the Venetian Expo Center in Las Vegas. This launch builds on UpToDate’s three-decade legacy, during which over 3 million clinicians have relied on its content for best practices in complex medical cases.
