TLDR: Equinix has launched its inaugural International Business Exchange (IBX) data center, CN1, in Chennai, India, with an initial investment of US$69 million. This AI-ready facility, located in Siruseri, is designed to support high-density, compute-intensive workloads through advanced liquid cooling solutions. It will provide 800 cabinets initially, scaling to 4,250, and is interconnected with Equinix’s Mumbai campus, aiming to strengthen India’s position as a global technology and AI hub.
Equinix, a global leader in digital infrastructure, has officially opened its first International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Chennai, India. Named CN1, this state-of-the-art facility is strategically located in Siruseri, Tamil Nadu, on a nearly six-acre plot of land. The launch signifies a pivotal step in advancing India’s digitalization journey and its ambition to become a global technology and AI hub.
The CN1 data center represents an initial investment of US$69 million and commences operations with 800 cabinets of capacity. Plans are in place for the facility to eventually scale up to support 4,250 cabinets, addressing the escalating demand for robust digital infrastructure in the region. A key feature of CN1 is its seamless interconnection with Equinix’s existing Mumbai campus, which houses three IBX data centers, thereby creating stronger links and a more interconnected ecosystem for businesses across the country.
Designed with future technological demands in mind, CN1 is explicitly ‘AI-ready’. It is purpose-built to accommodate advanced liquid cooling solutions, a critical capability for managing the high-density, compute-intensive workloads characteristic of artificial intelligence systems and other emerging technologies. This advanced design ensures the center is well-positioned to handle the significant computing power and data processing resources required for India’s evolving technology landscape.
Manoj Paul, Managing Director for India at Equinix, emphasized the strategic importance of this expansion. “We are delighted to announce the launch of our high-performance IBX data center, CN1, in Chennai, marking Equinix’s expansion in India and a pivotal step in advancing the nation’s digitalization journey,” said Paul. He added, “Our success in building the most interconnected ecosystem for cloud, carrier, content and enterprises in Mumbai will now be extended to customers in Tamil Nadu. This milestone highlights our commitment to empowering India’s position as a global technology hub while ensuring sustainability and innovation remain at the core of our operations.”
