ASML Forges Strategic AI Alliance with Mistral AI, Investing €1.3 Billion for Chip Innovation

TLDR: ASML, the world’s leading supplier of extreme ultraviolet lithography machines, has announced a significant strategic partnership with French AI startup Mistral AI. This collaboration involves a €1.3 billion investment from ASML, securing an 11% stake and a seat on Mistral AI’s Strategic Committee. The partnership aims to integrate Mistral AI’s advanced models across ASML’s research, development, and operations to accelerate future chip design, enhance lithography system performance, and bolster European technological sovereignty in AI.

Veldhoven, Netherlands – September 19, 2025 – ASML Holding NV, the Dutch giant and sole global provider of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems crucial for advanced chip manufacturing, has unveiled a groundbreaking strategic partnership with Paris-based artificial intelligence firm Mistral AI. The alliance is cemented by ASML’s lead investment of €1.3 billion in Mistral AI’s Series C funding round, granting ASML an approximately 11% shareholding on a fully diluted basis and a pivotal seat on Mistral AI’s Strategic Committee. This move signifies a deeper integration of AI into the core of semiconductor technology.

The partnership extends beyond a traditional client-vendor relationship, focusing on leveraging Mistral AI’s advanced models across ASML’s entire product portfolio, including research, development, and operational cycles. The primary objective is to drive faster innovation, improve time-to-market for new chip designs, and enhance the performance and efficiency of ASML’s sophisticated lithography systems for its global customer base. Both companies are also committed to joint research initiatives to explore novel applications of AI within the semiconductor sector.

Christophe Fouquet, President and Chief Executive Officer of ASML, emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration, stating, “We believe that this strategic partnership with Mistral AI, which goes beyond a traditional vendor-client relationship, is the best way to capture this significant opportunity. We also believe that this collaboration is value enhancing to Mistral AI.” He highlighted the synergy between ASML’s industrial leadership and engineering capabilities with Mistral AI’s frontier AI expertise.

Arthur Mensch, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mistral AI, echoed this sentiment, adding, “We are proud to engage in this long-term partnership with ASML, combining our frontier AI expertise with ASML’s unmatched industrial leadership and most sophisticated engineering capabilities. We believe this partnership will strengthen Mistral AI’s proposition, position, and value in the AI market.”

ASML’s Chief Financial Officer, Roger Dassen, will represent the company on Mistral AI’s Strategic Committee, providing an advisory role in shaping Mistral AI’s future strategy and technology roadmap. This direct involvement ensures that Mistral AI’s development trajectory aligns with ASML’s long-term strategic objectives for AI deployment in semiconductor manufacturing.

The investment values Mistral AI at approximately €11.8 billion (around $14 billion). Analysts note that ASML’s decision to invest in Mistral AI, a European alternative to larger US AI firms like OpenAI (valued significantly higher), reflects a strategic choice for better value, stronger strategic alignment, and a commitment to fostering European technological sovereignty amidst increasing geopolitical considerations and US protectionism in the tech sector. This collaboration is seen as a critical step in bolstering Europe’s push for semiconductor independence and strengthening the links between chip production and AI development across the continent.
