TLDR: Elon Musk has issued a strict 48-hour deadline for all xAI employees to submit one-page summaries detailing their accomplishments from the past four weeks and their strategic plans for the next four weeks. This directive comes during a period of significant turbulence for the artificial intelligence company, marked by recent layoffs and an impending all-hands meeting.
Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, has mandated that all employees provide a concise, one-page report outlining their achievements over the last four weeks and their objectives for the upcoming month. The deadline for these submissions is set for Thursday noon, following an email sent to staff on Tuesday afternoon. This move underscores Musk’s characteristic hands-on approach to employee accountability and productivity across his various ventures, including Tesla and X (formerly Twitter).
The directive arrives at a particularly tumultuous time for xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence startup. The company is reportedly grappling with internal upheaval, including recent significant staff reductions. Business Insider previously reported that over 500 data annotators, crucial for training xAI’s Grok AI chatbot, were laid off. This reduction in generalist AI tutors is part of a strategic shift, with xAI planning to expand its hiring for highly specialized AI tutor roles, offering increased compensation for expertise in fields such as STEM, finance, medicine, and even meme and headline commentary.

According to a copy of the email obtained by CNN, Musk’s message was direct: ‘Send a one-page summary of what you’ve accomplished in the past four weeks and what you intend to accomplish in the next four weeks. This is due by noon on Thursday.’ This demand precedes a scheduled three-hour all-hands meeting for xAI employees on Wednesday, further highlighting the intense scrutiny and pressure within the company as it navigates a competitive artificial intelligence landscape. Musk’s history includes similar demands for performance reviews, such as requiring X staff in August 2024 to submit monthly and yearly contribution summaries to determine stock and option allocations.
