TLDR: A recent Lenovo report reveals that a significant majority of IT leaders globally believe their current cybersecurity measures are inadequate to combat the rising tide of AI-powered cybercrime. Concerns are high regarding external AI-driven attacks, insider threats stemming from AI misuse, and the challenge of protecting AI systems themselves.
A new report from Lenovo highlights a critical vulnerability in global enterprise security, with most companies admitting their current defenses are ill-equipped to handle the escalating threat of AI-powered cybercrime. The study, which surveyed 600 IT leaders worldwide, found that a staggering two-thirds (65%) believe their existing cybersecurity solutions are outdated and incapable of fending off modern attackers.
According to the report, IT leaders are primarily concerned with three major areas. Firstly, the proliferation of external threats is a significant worry, as generative AI is making cyberattacks ‘faster, more convincing, and harder to detect.’ This includes sophisticated tactics such as polymorphic malware, advanced AI-driven phishing campaigns, and deepfake impersonation, which are increasingly difficult for traditional security systems to identify and neutralize.
Secondly, insider risks are a growing concern. Nearly three-quarters (70%) of IT leaders expressed apprehension about their employees potentially misusing AI tools. Furthermore, over 60% indicated that AI agents are creating an entirely new category of insider threats that their organizations are currently unprepared to manage. This suggests a dual challenge of both intentional and unintentional misuse of AI within the corporate environment.
Finally, the report underscores the emerging challenge of defending AI itself. AI models, their training data, and the prompts used to interact with them are now considered high-value targets. Protecting these components from manipulation and compromise is becoming a crucial, yet often overlooked, aspect of cybersecurity strategy.

In light of these findings, the report emphasizes that ‘AI has changed the balance of power in cybersecurity.’ To maintain a competitive and secure posture, organizations are urged to adopt and embed adaptive AI into their defense mechanisms, ensuring their security intelligence can evolve as rapidly as the threats they face.
