Cohere Secures $6.8 Billion Valuation with $500 Million Funding Round, Appoints Former Meta AI Head Joelle Pineau as Chief AI Officer

TLDR: Canadian AI startup Cohere has successfully closed a $500 million funding round, elevating its valuation to $6.8 billion. The company also announced the strategic appointment of Joelle Pineau, formerly Meta’s VP of AI Research, as its new Chief AI Officer, alongside Francois Chadwick as Chief Financial Officer. This capital injection and leadership expansion are set to accelerate Cohere’s focus on developing secure, enterprise-grade agentic AI solutions.

Cohere, a prominent Canadian artificial intelligence startup, has achieved a significant milestone, securing a $500 million funding round that propels its valuation to an impressive $6.8 billion. This latest capital infusion, which was oversubscribed, marks a substantial increase from its previous valuation of $5.5 billion in July and $2.2 billion in June 2023, bringing its total funds raised to approximately $1.5 billion. The funding round was co-led by Toronto-based Radical Ventures and Montreal-based Inovia Capital. Additional participation came from a robust group of existing investors, including AMD Ventures, NVIDIA, PSP Investments, and Salesforce Ventures, with new investors such as the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan also joining.

In conjunction with its financial growth, Cohere has strategically strengthened its executive leadership team with two key appointments. Joelle Pineau, a highly respected figure in the AI community, has been named Cohere’s Chief AI Officer. Pineau previously served as Meta’s Vice President of AI Research, where she led the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team across North America and Europe, developing advanced models and algorithms for various applications. She is also a professor at the School of Computer Science at McGill University and a core member of Mila, the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute. Pineau will spearhead Cohere’s research and product development efforts from its Montreal office, which opened last month. Complementing this, Francois Chadwick has been appointed Chief Financial Officer. Chadwick brings extensive experience, having served as acting CFO at Uber, where he played a crucial role during the company’s IPO transition, and also held senior positions at KPMG and Shield AI.

Cohere’s core mission revolves around providing secure, enterprise-grade AI solutions, differentiating itself in a competitive market by emphasizing local data control and regulatory compliance. The company aims to address the specific needs of businesses and governments, offering agentic AI solutions designed to automate tedious tasks and enhance efficiency. Its ‘North’ platform integrates generative models (Command A series), retrieval models (Embed 4, Rerank 3.5), and agentic AI capabilities. Cohere has already established strategic partnerships with major players across various sectors, including Oracle, Dell, RBC, Bell, and SAP, demonstrating its strong traction in finance, healthcare, telecommunications, and manufacturing.

While Cohere’s growth is significant, with approximately $100 million in recurring revenue, it acknowledges the competitive landscape dominated by rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, which boast substantially higher revenues and valuations. Cohere’s strategy to close this gap is its unwavering focus on security and privacy, offering private deployment options, allowing customers to opt out of model training, and implementing rigorous threat-detection and testing systems.
