New Zealand to Integrate AI and STEM into Revamped High School Curriculum

TLDR: Education Minister Erica Stanford has unveiled a ‘future-focused’ overhaul of the Years 11-13 high school curriculum, set to be phased in from 2028. The changes emphasize STEM subjects, industry-led pathways, and a significant focus on Artificial Intelligence, including the potential introduction of a dedicated Year 13 specialist subject on Generative AI.

New Zealand’s Education Minister, Erica Stanford, has announced a comprehensive revamp of the high school curriculum for Years 11 to 13, with implementation slated to begin in 2028. The ‘future-focused’ changes aim to equip students with relevant skills for tertiary education, trades, and direct entry into the workforce, offering greater choice and specialized pathways.

Minister Stanford highlighted the growing importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields in a rapidly evolving world. New specialist subjects will include Earth and Space Science, Statistics and Data Science, and Electronics and Mechatronics. A range of new specialist mathematics subjects, such as Further Maths, will also be introduced. Beyond STEM, the curriculum will expand to include Civics, Politics and Philosophy; Media, Journalism and Communications; Te Mātai i te Ao Māori; Pacific Studies; and Music Technology.

A key component of the reform is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across various subjects. Students will gain knowledge and practical experience with generative AI, covering topics such as digital systems, machine learning, cybersecurity, and digital ethics. The Ministry is also exploring the development of a new, dedicated Year 13 specialist subject focused entirely on Generative AI.

In addition to Ministry-led subjects, the government plans to introduce strengthened industry-led pathways. These will encompass areas like primary industry, health and wellbeing services, outdoor education, automotive engineering, building and construction, infrastructure engineering, mechanical engineering, and tourism and hospitality. Minister Stanford stated, ‘These pathways will be industry led and tertiary aligned so they meet what is expected in the professional world, making staying at school relevant for every child, no matter what their career pathway. This will enable students to leave school with a secondary and a tertiary qualification. We’re having one integrated system where all subjects, whether Ministry led or industry-led, are equal.’

The curriculum for Te Marautanga o Aotearoa (Māori-medium schools) will also see significant enhancements, receiving its first-ever detailed curriculum in te reo Māori. This will incorporate new subjects such as Tātai Arorangi (Māori traditional systems of Earth and Sky), Te Ao Whakairo (Māori carving), and other Te Ao Māori subjects.

To support these extensive changes, the Minister confirmed that schools would receive a comprehensive implementation package. This package will include professional learning and development, dedicated Curriculum Days, and readily available classroom resources, exemplars, and guidance for all curriculum areas and year levels, well in advance of the official implementation dates. The draft Ministry-led Years 11-13 subjects are expected to be released in Term 1, 2026, for feedback and familiarization.

Minister Stanford emphasized the overarching goal: ‘When students get to high school, we want them to have access to innovative and dynamic subjects that will help grow New Zealand’s future and take on the world. We are creating clear, coherent pathways from school into study, training and employment – giving every student the skills and confidence to thrive in the future of work.’
