Cognition AI Achieves $10.2 Billion Valuation Following $400 Million Funding Round

TLDR: AI startup Cognition AI has secured a $400 million funding round, propelling its valuation to $10.2 billion. This significant investment, led by Founders Fund, underscores strong investor confidence in the company’s AI-powered software engineering tools, particularly its flagship product, Devin, and its recent acquisition of Windsurf. The company has demonstrated remarkable revenue growth, with its Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) soaring from $1 million to $73 million in less than a year, further boosted by strategic acquisitions and expanding enterprise clientele.

San Francisco-based artificial intelligence startup Cognition AI has reached a staggering valuation of $10.2 billion after successfully closing a new funding round of approximately $400 million. This substantial investment highlights the continued fervent interest and confidence from investors in the rapidly evolving field of AI-powered software development.

The latest funding round was spearheaded by Founders Fund, the prominent venture capital firm backed by Peter Thiel. Existing investors, including Lux Capital, Joe Lonsdale’s 8VC, Elad Gil, Definition Capital, and Swish Ventures, also participated, alongside new strategic investors such as Bain Capital Ventures, Hanabi Capital, and D1 Capital. This influx of capital marks a significant leap for Cognition AI, which was valued at $4 billion earlier this year, reflecting its accelerated growth and market traction.

Cognition AI is best known for its innovative coding tool, Devin, which it touts as “the world’s first AI software engineer.” Devin is designed to automate complex coding tasks, from writing and debugging to deploying code, thereby transforming traditional software engineering workflows. The company has reported impressive financial performance, with its Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) from Devin skyrocketing from $1 million in September 2024 to an estimated $73 million by June 2025. This exponential growth underscores the increasing adoption and effectiveness of its AI solutions in the market.

A pivotal moment in Cognition AI’s recent trajectory was its acquisition of the coding startup Windsurf in July. This strategic move more than doubled Cognition AI’s overall revenue and significantly expanded its product suite, integrating advanced DevOps tools. Post-acquisition, the combined enterprise ARR of Cognition AI has seen a further increase of over 30% in just seven weeks, driven by successful cross-selling between previously distinct customer bases. Windsurf’s clients have begun adopting Devin, while Cognition’s existing business users are now leveraging Windsurf’s offerings.

Despite its rapid expansion, Cognition AI has maintained efficient operations, reporting a total net burn of under $20 million since its inception two years ago. The company boasts an impressive roster of enterprise clients, including financial giants like Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Citigroup Inc., as well as leading technology firms such as Palantir Technologies Inc., Dell Technologies Inc., Cisco Systems Inc., Ramp, Nubank, and Mercado Libre. This diverse client base further solidifies Cognition AI’s position as a frontrunner in providing autonomous software development solutions to large-scale corporate clients.
