TLDR: Lenovo has officially joined the Coalition for Sustainable AI, a French government-led initiative in partnership with the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Announced at the Paris AI Action Summit, this collaboration aims to align AI development with global sustainability goals, foster responsible AI, and contribute to the UN 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals.
At the Paris AI Action Summit earlier this year, Lenovo, a leading global technology company, announced its membership in the Coalition for Sustainable AI. This significant initiative, spearheaded by the French government in collaboration with the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), is dedicated to ensuring that the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence are harmonized with critical environmental sustainability objectives and promote responsible AI practices.
The Coalition for Sustainable AI brings together a diverse array of global stakeholders, including prominent technology firms such as AMD, Nvidia, SAP, and Schneider Electric, alongside Lenovo. These members are collectively committed to fostering international cooperation to shape AI development in a manner that actively supports environmental policies and drives progress towards the UN 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular emphasis on climate action and environmental protection.
Lenovo’s involvement extends to contributing to the coalition’s innovation hub, an open and collaborative platform. This hub is designed to advance scientific research, establish industry standards, and develop practical solutions for integrating AI with environmental goals effectively.
Shama Patari, VP & Deputy General Counsel, Ethics & Compliance, Government Relations & Trade at Lenovo, articulated the company’s vision on AI’s role: “At Lenovo, we believe that AI is not only a tool for greater efficiency, but also a catalyst for sustainable innovation.” Patari further stated, “By joining the Coalition for Sustainable AI, we reinforce our commitment to designing systems, reducing waste, and optimizing energy use across our value chain as part of our journey to net-zero.”
This commitment is integral to Lenovo’s broader environmental objectives. The company is actively working towards achieving its net-zero goals by 2050, a target that received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in January 2023. To meet these ambitious targets, Lenovo has set specific benchmarks, including a goal to improve the energy efficiency of its servers by 50% by 2030, benchmarked against 2018 levels. Additionally, Lenovo highlights its proprietary Neptune™ direct water-cooling technology, which enables customers to reduce power consumption by up to 40% and achieve a 3.5x improvement in efficiency.

Lenovo’s participation in this new coalition complements its ongoing engagements in other responsible AI initiatives. These include adherence to the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, Canada’s Voluntary Code of Conduct on Generative AI, and the European Commission’s AI Pact. With a robust internal AI governance framework, encompassing a Responsible AI committee and an established AI policy, Lenovo continues to demonstrate its dedication to responsibility and accountability within the AI landscape. The company also leverages groundbreaking AI internally to enhance its own operations and assists enterprises in their AI transformation journeys.
