Leo AI Secures $9.7 Million to Revolutionize Mechanical Engineering with Pioneering Large Mechanical Model

TLDR: Massachusetts-based startup Leo AI has successfully closed an oversubscribed seed funding round, raising $9.7 million. The capital will fuel the development and expansion of its Large Mechanical Model (LMM), an AI-powered ‘copilot’ designed to significantly enhance productivity and streamline design processes for mechanical engineers by automating repetitive tasks and generating 3D CAD models from simple inputs.

Leo AI, a cutting-edge Massachusetts-based startup, announced on September 2, 2025, the successful closure of an oversubscribed seed funding round, securing $9.7 million. This significant investment is earmarked to accelerate the development and market expansion of its groundbreaking Large Mechanical Model (LMM), an artificial intelligence ‘copilot’ poised to transform the mechanical engineering sector.

The funding round saw participation from a diverse group of prominent investors, including lead investor Flint Capital, an Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) scout, Tech Aviv, Two Lanterns VC, former SolidWorks CEO Bertrand Sicot, and Google VP Yossi Matias. This strong backing underscores the industry’s confidence in Leo AI’s innovative approach to addressing long-standing challenges in mechanical design and engineering.

At the heart of Leo AI’s offering is its Large Mechanical Model (LMM), touted as the world’s first of its kind. Unlike traditional language models that process words, the LMM treats machine parts as its fundamental units. It has been meticulously trained on an extensive dataset comprising over a million engineering resources, including technical literature, detailed sketches, comprehensive parts catalogs, global industry standards, and peer-reviewed research. This specialized training enables the LMM to answer complex mechanical questions with an impressive 95% accuracy, a stark contrast to the 46% accuracy typically observed in general-purpose AI models like GPT.

The primary objective of Leo AI’s copilot is to liberate mechanical engineers from time-consuming, repetitive tasks that often consume hundreds of workdays annually. These tasks include searching for specific components, cross-checking various standards, and meticulously filling in specifications. The platform allows engineers to interact with the system using simple text prompts, sketches, or even 3D designs to query for specific parts or visualize concepts. Crucially, the LMM can convert a basic text prompt or a rough sketch into detailed CAD models within seconds, drastically reducing manual design time.

Co-founder Maor Farid articulated the problem Leo AI aims to solve, stating, “When I started out as a mechanical engineer, I thought I’d be designing life-saving robots and next-gen vehicles. Instead, I spent weeks just searching for parts — and that’s a harsh reality that most engineers face.” He added, “Leo saves up to 5 hours of repetitive work each week. And, most importantly, it helps engineers get their spark and passion for innovation back.”

This innovative approach has already garnered significant traction among major corporations. Leo AI’s subscription-based service boasts an impressive client roster that includes industry giants such as Scania, HP, Siemens, and Mobileye. The company claims its platform can reduce product development timelines by up to 70%, offering substantial cost savings in an industry where project delays can inflate expenses by over a third.

Founded in 2023 by Maor Farid, a Fulbright MIT postdoc and former Unit 8200 AI researcher, and AI expert Moti Moravia, a veteran of Israel’s Ministry of Defense, Leo AI demonstrated remarkable early success. In its inaugural month of monetization, the company generated $100,000 in revenue without any marketing expenditure. To date, its platform has been instrumental in producing more than 475,000 3D concepts across diverse sectors, including aerospace, medical devices, and transportation, signaling a robust demand for its transformative technology.
