India Faces Critical AI Talent Shortage Amidst Hyper-Growth, Driving Up Senior Salaries in GCCs

TLDR: India’s burgeoning AI market, projected to hit $28.8 billion by 2025, is grappling with a severe talent deficit, particularly in Generative AI (GenAI). A recent report reveals only one qualified engineer is available for every ten GenAI roles, with the overall AI talent gap expected to widen by 53% by 2026. This scarcity is leading to significantly high salaries for senior professionals in Global Capability Centers (GCCs), with some earning up to ₹60 lakh per annum, and leadership roles commanding even higher compensation.

India’s digital economy is on a trajectory of hyper-growth, with its Artificial Intelligence (AI) market forecasted to reach an impressive $28.8 billion by 2025, expanding at a 45% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR). This rapid expansion is positioning AI as a cornerstone for enterprise value creation and is expected to contribute nearly one-fifth to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, this ambitious growth is shadowed by a critical talent crunch across key digital domains, most notably in AI, Generative AI (GenAI), cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

According to the ‘Digital Skills & Salary Primer Report for FY2025-26’ by specialist staffing firm TeamLease Digital, the demand-supply imbalance is stark. For every ten open GenAI positions, there is currently only one qualified engineer available. This severe shortfall is projected to worsen, with the AI talent gap expected to widen by 53% by 2026. Cloud computing faces a similar predicament, with a projected demand-supply mismatch of 55-60% in the next two years, while cybersecurity grapples with a 25-30% deficit at mid-to-senior levels.

Neeti Sharma, Chief Executive at TeamLease Digital, emphasized the pivotal moment for India’s digital economy, stating, “India’s digital economy is at a pivotal juncture, with AI, Cloud, and Cybersecurity redefining the future of work.” She highlighted that Global Capability Centers (GCCs) are at the forefront of this digital hiring wave, anticipated to contribute 22-25% of net new white-collar tech jobs in 2025. Of the 4.7 million new tech jobs projected by 2027, over 1.2 million are expected to originate from GCCs, particularly in GenAI and engineering R&D roles.

The talent scarcity is significantly impacting compensation structures, especially within GCCs. Senior professionals in Generative AI Engineering and MLOps roles are commanding premium salaries of ₹58-60 lakh per annum (LPA), with annual growth rates exceeding 18%. Mid-level professionals in specialized AI areas like prompt engineering, agent design, and orchestration are earning between ₹22-35 lakh. Leadership positions such as Chief AI Officer (CAIO), Chief Data Officer (CDO), and Chief Product Officer (CPO), crucial for governing GenAI adoption and digital transformation, are among the highest paid in GCCs, with compensation ranging from ₹2-2.5 crore annually.

Beyond metros like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, which traditionally offer a 15-20% salary premium for senior roles, cities like Pune and Gurgaon are gaining ground, narrowing the pay gap. GCC hiring is also expanding into Tier-2 and Tier-3 engineering campuses, with 130,000-140,000 fresh graduates expected to be recruited in FY25. Entry-level salaries for freshers in AI, data engineering, and cybersecurity have stabilized at ₹6-8.5 lakh across various tiers, signaling a “democratisation of India’s digital workforce.”

To mitigate the widening talent gap and prevent constraints on enterprise ambitions, the report underscores the urgent need for large-scale upskilling initiatives. The adoption of AI is also expected to reshape job markets, potentially impacting up to 40% of global roles, particularly in sectors like IT services, customer experience, BFSI, and healthcare. Enterprises are prioritizing AI-first learning models, digital literacy, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure a steady pipeline of market-ready talent.
