OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research and deployment company, has announced a substantial educational initiative in India, aiming to empower half a million students and teachers with free access to premium ChatGPT licenses over the next six months. This ambitious program is being rolled out in close collaboration with key Indian educational bodies, including the Ministry of Education, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and IIT-Madras.
Dubbed an ‘India-first’ Learning Accelerator programme, this initiative marks one of OpenAI’s most significant investments in the country’s education sector. Beyond the distribution of 500,000 free licenses, the program includes a substantial research grant of ₹4.5 crore (approximately $500,000) to IIT-Madras. This grant will fund a crucial research partnership focused on examining how AI tools influence teaching practices, learning outcomes, and cognitive development. The findings from this study are slated to be made public, with the aim of informing both education policy and future product design.
Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s vice-president of education, emphasized the scale and importance of this endeavor, stating that the initiative represents one of the company’s largest education investments in India. The premium ChatGPT licenses are designed to offer tangible benefits for both educators and learners. Teachers will gain access to advanced tools tailored for lesson planning and enhancing classroom engagement, while students will benefit from features such as a ‘Study Mode’ and interactive quizzes, designed to foster a more dynamic and personalized learning experience.
