The Genesis of a Name: How ‘ChatGPT’ Was Forged in a Late-Night Decision

TLDR: The widely recognized name ‘ChatGPT’ was the result of a pivotal ‘late-night decision’ made by OpenAI executives just a day before its public launch in late 2022. Originally slated to be ‘Chat with GPT-3.5,’ the simpler, more memorable moniker was chosen to enhance user accessibility and played a crucial role in the chatbot’s rapid global adoption.

The ubiquitous name ‘ChatGPT,’ now synonymous with the generative AI revolution, was nearly very different. According to recent revelations from OpenAI executives, the iconic name was settled upon during a critical ‘late-night decision’ made merely 24 hours before the chatbot’s viral launch in late 2022. This last-minute change saw the complex ‘Chat with GPT-3.5’ simplified to the now-familiar ‘ChatGPT,’ a move that proved instrumental in its widespread success.

Insights into this pivotal moment were shared on a recent OpenAI podcast by Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, and Mark Chen, research chief. Turley disclosed that the decision to streamline the product’s name was made on the eve of its public debut. ‘It was going to be Chat with GPT-3.5, and we had a late-night decision to simplify’ the name, Turley stated on the podcast. He further explained the rationale: ‘We realised that that would be hard to pronounce and came up with a great name instead.’ The chosen name, ChatGPT, is an abbreviation for ‘Generative Pre-trained Transformer,’ accurately reflecting its technical foundation while being far more user-friendly.

Before its launch, few within OpenAI fully grasped the profound impact the name would have. Andrew Mayne, the podcast host and OpenAI’s former science communicator, highlighted that ChatGPT’s core capabilities were largely consistent with its predecessors. The key differentiators that propelled its viral growth were primarily a more intuitive user interface and, critically, its new, highly memorable name. Mayne noted, ‘It’s the same thing, but we just put the interface in here and made it so you didn’t have to prompt as much.’

Following its launch, ChatGPT rapidly garnered millions of users worldwide, quickly becoming a global phenomenon. Mark Chen reflected on this unprecedented success, stating, ‘We’ve had so many launches, so many previews over time, and this one really was something else.’ For Chen, ChatGPT’s triumph even marked a personal milestone, as he humorously added, ‘My parents just stopped asking me to go work for Google.’ The chatbot’s explosive popularity has since ignited a fierce wave of competition across the AI landscape, with numerous rivals, including Meta AI, entering the fray.
