A new survey conducted by Cox Mobile, titled ‘Connecting the Digital Dots: Online Habits and Safety Concerns Across Three Generations,’ has unveiled a significant trend in adolescent technology use: a staggering 91% of teens are now utilizing generative artificial intelligence. This widespread adoption underscores AI’s growing integration into daily life for younger generations.
The survey, which gathered insights from over 1,600 participants, included 500 teens aged 13 to 17, 500 seniors aged 65 and older, and 600 parents aged 39 to 59. With a margin of error of +/-4% for each age group, the findings offer a reliable snapshot of digital habits across demographics. Teens predominantly use generative AI for personal questions, emphasizing the critical need for digital literacy skills, particularly in discerning false or misleading information online.
Beyond AI usage, the Cox Mobile survey also shed light on the array of online security issues teens have encountered over the past year. These threats include exposure to inappropriate content, privacy violations, cybersecurity threats, encounters with online predators, and cyberbullying. Despite these challenges, the report notes that while more than a quarter of teens experience stress, anxiety, or isolation from constant connectivity, many still recognize the substantial value their digital devices bring to their daily lives. Positive outcomes cited by teens include staying connected with friends and family, increased convenience, assistance with schoolwork and remote learning, access to entertainment like shows, gaming, and music, discovering new information or skills, and building social networks.
