Google has officially launched applications for the 2025 Google for Startups Accelerator (GFSA) program in South Africa, marking a significant commitment to nurturing the nation’s burgeoning tech ecosystem. This three-month, hybrid-modelled accelerator is specifically designed to empower South African Series A technology startups and their founders who are at the forefront of leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to address critical challenges.
Participants in the GFSA program will gain unparalleled access to Google’s extensive AI tools, resources, and infrastructure, including direct access to Gemini, Google’s latest AI technology. Beyond technological support, selected startups will benefit from mentorship provided by Google engineers and AI professionals, enhancing their technical capabilities and strategic direction. The program also promises increased visibility through Google’s vast network, offering opportunities for global exposure, and a substantial R1 million in equity-free funding per startup.
Folarin Aiyegbusi, head of start-up ecosystem, Africa at Google, emphasized the company’s dedication to the region’s entrepreneurial spirit. “South Africa’s start-ups are tackling some of the world’s most urgent challenges, and we’re committed to supporting their long-term growth,” Aiyegbusi stated. He added, “Through the Google for Start-ups Accelerator programme, we aim to provide these companies with the resources they need to scale and make a greater global impact.”
To be eligible for the program, applying startups must be headquartered in South Africa and be developing solutions that address local challenges, with a clear potential for expansion across Africa and globally. Applicants are required to demonstrate a profound understanding of their target market, coupled with a proven track record of traction and significant growth potential. Furthermore, at least one founder must be of South African descent, and the founding teams must possess relevant experience and strong team dynamics essential for successful execution of their vision. A core requirement is that the startup’s product must be AI-driven and already live and functional in the market. Startups should also be open to leveraging Google products and platforms, such as Google Cloud, to enhance their solutions and accelerate growth.

Since its inception in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program has made a considerable impact, supporting between 106 and 140 startups across 17 African countries. These companies have collectively raised over $263 million to $300 million in funding and have been instrumental in creating more than 2,800 to 3,000 jobs. Google has further demonstrated its commitment by providing approximately $5 million in equity-free funding and product credits to these ventures, underscoring its role in fostering a vibrant and sustainable startup ecosystem across the continent.
