Jeff Lu, a 35-year-old visionary with a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, has dedicated his entire adult life to the intersection of AI and video. His extensive background includes stints as a Microsoft intern, working on Face ID technology at Apple, and contributing to video processing services at Google Cloud. Lu’s entrepreneurial journey with Akool began in 2020 as a side project, following his departure from Google due to what he described as the company’s restrictive policies on generative AI at the time. “At the time, they were very conservative about generative AI. They didn’t want us working on any products where they couldn’t control the outcomes,” Lu stated, highlighting his drive for independent innovation.
Akool quickly gained traction, generating over $100,000 in revenue in its second year and rapidly expanding to a team of 10 employees. The company strategically utilized just eight Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to train specialized AI video models, termed ‘human models,’ in a matter of weeks.
