AI Fuels Semiconductor Investment Surge, Yet Disparities Emerge in Global Market

The global semiconductor industry is witnessing a robust resurgence in investment, largely propelled by the insatiable demand for artificial intelligence capabilities. This renewed interest is reshaping the landscape, but the benefits are proving to be unevenly distributed across the market.

Major players are reporting significant gains directly attributable to AI. For instance, Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision) achieved record profits in Q2 2025, with revenue climbing 16% year-over-year to TWD 1.79 trillion and net profit rising 27% to TWD 44.4 billion. A key driver was its AI server sales, which surged over 60% year-over-year, with projections for Q3 revenue from this segment to grow more than 170%. The company has maintained a strong full-year growth outlook, underscoring sustained AI demand.

Conversely, challenges persist for others. DeepSeek, for example, reportedly delayed the launch of its R2 model due to unsuccessful training runs on Huawei’s Ascend chips, ultimately opting for Nvidia hardware. This incident highlights the performance gap with US rivals and the complexities faced by some in the race for AI dominance, particularly in China’s domestic chip development efforts.

Governments worldwide are actively investing to secure their positions in the semiconductor and AI sectors. China’s Ministry of Finance has allocated Â¥398.12 billion yuan ($55 billion) for science and technology in its 2025 central budget, a 10% increase from 2024. This substantial investment, the third-largest budget item, aims to accelerate national R&D and achieve self-reliance in critical areas like semiconductors and AI. Similarly, the US CHIPS Act has spurred significant private sector investment, estimated at $200 billion, into domestic semiconductor production, enhancing manufacturing capabilities and national security.

Global collaboration and regional strengths are also coming to the fore. SoftBank Group’s chairman and CEO, Masayoshi Son, emphasized a deepened commitment to AI innovation in the United States following a deal for Ampere, highlighting Ampere’s expertise in semiconductors and high-performance computing as crucial for accelerating this vision. India is also emerging as a significant hub, with 20% of the global semiconductor workforce already based in the country, indicating a strong ecosystem for chip design. Vietnam is rapidly rising as a major player in AI and semiconductor technology, supported by government backing, foreign investment, and a focus on talent development. The AI chip market is projected to reach approximately $928 billion by 2034, signaling a massive surge in demand for intelligent semiconductor solutions and driving innovation across design automation, process optimization, quality control, and supply chain management within the industry.
