Epic, a leading electronic health record (EHR) vendor, has announced the integration of Ambience Healthcare’s artificial intelligence (AI) platform into its “Toolbox” program. This strategic move is set to significantly enhance clinical documentation, coding, and overall workflow efficiency for healthcare providers utilizing Epic’s systems. The Toolbox program, a component of Epic Showroom, serves to highlight software categories with recommended integration practices and features third-party applications that adhere to these guidelines. Ambience Healthcare joins other AI ambient scribe solutions like Suki and Commure within the ambient voice recognition category.
The inclusion of Ambience in the Toolbox program is expected to broaden the reach of its AI-powered documentation capabilities to a larger base of Epic customers. Furthermore, this integration will launch Ambience’s latest functionalities with Epic’s Ambient Module and the Haiku mobile application. This means that Ambience’s advanced features will be natively accessible within Haiku, EpicCare’s mobile app, allowing clinicians to initiate recordings directly from Haiku in various settings, including outpatient, emergency department, and inpatient environments.
Nikhil Buduma, co-founder and chief scientist at Ambience Healthcare, emphasized Epic’s commitment to deepening its integration and partnership with ambient technology providers in the market. He stated that Ambience’s ongoing collaboration with Epic ensures its technology is deeply embedded within clinicians’ workflows. Buduma highlighted a key achievement of this partnership: “One of the things that we’ve been able to do with this partnership is take a lot of the features that Ambience customers really love about Ambience that includes things such as in the ED environment, the ability to stop and start recording and have immediate documentation right back into Epic, which previously wasn’t possible with the API specs that Epic had on the market. Now all that functionality is now natively available inside of Epic in Haiku and Hyperspace and Hyperdrive.” He added that “Clinicians now have those workflows available in the Haiku experience, which is a more ideal end-to-end workflow, so you never have to leave the Epic ecosystem.”
This development comes amidst rumors of Epic’s own plans to launch an AI scribe. Despite this, Buduma views Epic’s development of its own AI-powered clinical documentation tool as beneficial for the broader ecosystem. He told Fierce Healthcare, “Epic releasing a solution for health systems it establishes a baseline for what is table stakes for health system.”
