TLDR: A team of students from the University of Ghana, guided by Mr. Julius Ludu, developed ‘Climate Sentinel,’ an AI and IoT solution to combat deforestation in Ghana. Their innovative system, designed for real-time forest monitoring, earned them the prestigious Green Development Award at the Huawei Global ICT Competition.
Accra, Ghana – A groundbreaking artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT) solution, ‘Climate Sentinel,’ developed by a team of students from the University of Ghana, has earned them the coveted Green Development Award at the recently concluded Huawei Global ICT Competition. The innovative system is poised to significantly aid Ghana’s ongoing battle against rampant deforestation.
The winning team comprises talented students Wisdom Nana-Abena Ogbonna, Ryan Nii Akwei Brown, and Jehoaddan Ebrah Andoh. Under the expert guidance of their lecturer, Mr. Julius Ludu, they engineered ‘Climate Sentinel’ as a comprehensive real-time monitoring and alert system specifically designed for Ghana’s vital forest reserves.
The inspiration for ‘Climate Sentinel’ stemmed from a sobering realization: a news report highlighting that nine of Ghana’s forty-four forest reserves had been completely encroached upon by illegal mining activities. This alarming statistic spurred the team to dedicate their project to addressing Ghana’s critical deforestation challenges.
Technologically, ‘Climate Sentinel’ is a sophisticated integration of AI algorithms with IoT sensors, creating a robust network capable of detecting deforestation activities across the country’s forest reserves in real-time. The solution leverages a suite of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, IoT, and big data, aligning perfectly with the requirements of the competition’s AI Innovation track, which encourages students to devise solutions with significant social and commercial value.
The Ghanaian team’s journey to global recognition began in the Innovation track, where they secured second place at the regional competition, thereby qualifying for the Global Finals held in China. Their exceptional work culminated in winning the esteemed Green Development Award.
