TLDR: Google’s Gemini AI is set to receive significant updates, including the ability to automatically remember user preferences for more personalized interactions. Additionally, a new ‘Temporary Chat’ feature will allow users to have conversations that are not saved or used to influence future interactions. These features are rolling out to Gemini 2.5 Pro and Flash models, with some regional restrictions.
Google is enhancing its Gemini artificial intelligence platform with two key updates designed to improve user experience and privacy. The most notable change is Gemini’s upcoming ability to automatically remember user preferences and details from past conversations. Currently, Gemini only retains information if explicitly instructed by the user. With this update, the AI will proactively learn from previous interactions, aiming to provide ‘more natural and relevant conversations, as if you’re collaborating with a partner who’s already up to speed,’ according to Google.
This automatic personalization feature is slated to launch in the coming weeks, initially for the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, followed by the 2.5 Flash version. It will be enabled by default upon availability, though users will have the option to disable it by navigating to Settings > Personal context and toggling off ‘Your past chats with Gemini.’ It’s important to note that this feature will not be available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK.
In parallel, Google is introducing a ‘Temporary Chat’ window, a privacy-centric addition that allows users to engage in conversations without them influencing future chats, appearing in chat history, or being logged in Gemini Apps Activity. To initiate a Temporary Chat, users can access the side panel and tap the dotted-window icon. This feature mirrors similar functionalities already present in rival chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, and Meta AI, many of which also offer privacy-focused temporary chat options.
Further streamlining its data management, Google is renaming ‘Gemini Apps Activity’ to ‘Keep Activity.’ This tab will continue to log all previous chats and provide options for disabling or deleting them. However, Google clarifies that even if ‘Gemini Apps Activity’ (now ‘Keep Activity’) is disabled, all chats, including those conducted within the Temporary Chat window, will be stored for 72 hours. This retention period is for platform safety and to process any user feedback.
