Meigs advocates for AI proponents to learn from other high-risk sectors such as aviation, chemical manufacturing, and nuclear power. These industries have achieved safety and societal benefit not by ignoring risks, but by decades of rigorous study of accidents and continuous improvement of safeguards. He suggests that rolling out AI demands an even higher level of vigilance.
A central concern highlighted by Meigs is the ‘faulty-reward problem,’ a challenge encountered by engineers, including those at OpenAI as early as 2016. This issue arises when it is difficult to precisely define the rewards that guide an AI agent, leading to ‘undesired or even dangerous actions.’ Such outcomes, Meigs notes, directly contradict the fundamental engineering principle that systems should be reliable and predictable.

While AI systems can serve as excellent assistants, Meigs cautions against over-reliance, stating, ‘Humans may be forgetful and fallible,’ but possess a ‘real-world common sense that AI systems still lack.’ He uses the example of future AI-assisted tugboats, suggesting that while they might reduce incidents like running over kayakers compared to human-piloted ones, they could also ‘make errors we can’t conceive of.’
