New Study by Deloitte and Meta Highlights Critical Gaps in Marketing Personalization Efforts

TLDR: A recent study commissioned by Meta and conducted by Deloitte Digital reveals that while a vast majority of US consumers desire personalized experiences, many organizations are failing to deliver due to issues like fragmented data and poor cross-functional collaboration. The research underscores the significant business benefits of effective personalization, including increased conversion rates and customer lifetime value, while also noting the growing role of AI in this evolving landscape.

A groundbreaking study, ‘The Path to Personalization: Strategies for Marketers,’ commissioned by Meta and conducted by Deloitte Digital, has unveiled a significant disconnect between consumer expectations for personalized marketing and brands’ ability to deliver. Released on August 6, 2025, the comprehensive research highlights critical challenges faced by organizations in harnessing the power of tailored customer experiences.

The study’s findings are compelling: 80% of US consumers report being more likely to make a purchase when brands offer personalized experiences. This consumer preference translates directly into tangible business outcomes. Marketers who excel in personalization see a notable 16-percentage-point increase in conversion rates compared to those with less personalized approaches. Furthermore, brands that successfully implement comprehensive personalization strategies can boost Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) by an impressive 20 percentage points. Consumers are also willing to spend 50% more with brands that effectively tailor content, services, or communications to their individual preferences.

Despite these clear benefits, many organizations struggle to meet consumer demands. The research points to key impediments such as siloed data management and inadequate cross-functional collaboration within companies. Consumers’ desires extend beyond mere relevance; 78% of US consumers seek personalization that offers financial savings, while 73% of EU consumers positively respond to advertisements providing useful information for products or services they intend to purchase.

The report also sheds light on the broader economic impact of personalized advertising. In the European Union alone, Meta’s personalized advertising technologies were linked to a staggering €213 billion in economic activity and supported 1.4 million jobs, demonstrating the macroeconomic ripple effects of effective personalization.

To assist brands in navigating this complex landscape, the study introduces a four-level maturity model. This framework helps organizations assess their current personalization capabilities across data, technology, and team collaboration, identifying areas for strategic improvement. The research outlines three primary personalization strategies: customer-based (tailoring to individuals), cohort-based (segmenting by shared traits), and aggregated data-based (using large-scale anonymized datasets).

Derya Matras, VP for Global Business Group at Meta, emphasized the strategic importance of this shift, stating, “As people want content and services that are more relevant to them, they are increasingly drawn to brands that make them feel understood.” The study also notes the increasing relevance of artificial intelligence in this domain, with the AI market projected to reach $733.7 billion by 2027, driven by the recognition of its role in advanced personalization.
