OpenAI Explores Advertising as Future Revenue Stream Amidst Rapid Growth

TLDR: OpenAI is reportedly considering an advertising-based revenue model for its AI products, with internal documents projecting significant ad revenue by 2026 and beyond, despite earlier hesitations from its leadership. This comes as the company experiences rapid growth and seeks diverse monetization strategies.

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research and deployment company, is reportedly exploring the integration of an advertising-based revenue model into its suite of AI products. This strategic consideration comes as the company seeks to diversify its income streams and capitalize on its rapidly expanding user base.

Internal company documents, as reported in April 2025, suggest that OpenAI anticipates monetizing its free user base through advertising, with projections indicating a substantial new revenue stream. Forecasts estimate approximately $1 billion in ad revenue in 2026 alone. This figure is projected to surge dramatically, potentially reaching nearly $25 billion by 2029, contributing significantly to a total projected revenue of $125 billion for the company by the same year.

This potential shift in business strategy marks a notable evolution for OpenAI, whose leadership has previously expressed reservations about advertising. In December, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar stated that while the company was open to new revenue avenues, there were “no active plans to pursue advertising” at that stage. Similarly, CEO Sam Altman has voiced a personal dislike for ads, referring to them as a “last resort” and an “aesthetic choice” he dislikes, emphasizing a preference for direct user payments for services. He has also described advertising as a “momentary industry” necessary to jumpstart the internet.

Despite these past sentiments, the internal financial projections underscore a growing imperative for OpenAI to explore all viable monetization paths as it scales. The move would align OpenAI with competitors in the AI space, such as Perplexity and Google, which have already integrated advertising into their AI product offerings.

OpenAI has seen remarkable growth, with reports in August 2025 indicating an annualized revenue run rate of $12 billion, on track to reach $20 billion by the end of 2025. The company’s flagship product, ChatGPT, boasts an estimated 700 million weekly active users. This rapid expansion and ambitious revenue targets, including a projected $174 billion by 2030, highlight the company’s serious focus on commercial expansion. While new products are expected to be major contributors to this growth, the monetization of free users through advertising could become a crucial component of the overall financial strategy.

The company has also recently made headlines with the release of its latest large-scale artificial intelligence model, GPT-5, and the introduction of “open-weight” models (GPT-OSS-120B and GPT-OSS-20B) designed to run locally on consumer hardware, further expanding its reach and influence in the AI ecosystem. These developments, alongside the exploration of an ad-based model, reflect OpenAI’s multifaceted approach to solidifying its market position and achieving its ambitious financial objectives.
