Weekly Insights: Key Developments in Analytics and Data Science from Databricks, Qbeast, and Power BI

TLDR: This week in analytics and data science, Databricks announced the availability of OpenAI’s new open-weight models (gpt-oss 20B and 120B) on its platform, enhancing AI capabilities for enterprises. Qbeast secured $7.6 million in seed funding to advance its data optimization platform, promising faster queries and reduced compute costs for open Lakehouse analytics. Microsoft is set to enable the standalone Copilot experience in Power BI by default for eligible tenants.

The week of August 8, 2025, brought several significant updates in the analytics and data science landscape, as curated by Solutions Review Executive Editor Tim King. These developments span product innovations, strategic partnerships, and funding rounds, highlighting the ongoing evolution of data management and artificial intelligence technologies.

Databricks has announced a pivotal partnership with OpenAI, making two new open-weight models—gpt-oss 20B and gpt-oss 120B—natively available on the Databricks platform. These models can be accessed across AWS, Azure, and GCP via the Foundation Model API. This integration is set to empower enterprise users with advanced reasoning and tool-use capabilities, offering greater flexibility and customization options compared to proprietary models.

In the realm of data optimization, Qbeast, a next-generation platform, successfully closed a $7.6 million seed funding round. The investment was led by Peak XV’s Surge (formerly Sequoia Capital India), with participation from HWK Tech Investment and Elaia Partners. This capital infusion is earmarked to accelerate open Lakehouse analytics. Qbeast’s innovative multi-dimensional indexing technology aims to tackle the ‘hidden tax’ associated with big data lakehouse frameworks like Delta Lake, Iceberg, and Hudi. The company claims its solution can deliver up to six times faster queries and reduce compute costs by up to 70% in production environments by significantly cutting down on wasted compute resources. Complementing this funding, Qbeast announced the appointment of Srikanth Satya, a seasoned cloud infrastructure veteran with experience at AWS and Microsoft Azure, as its new CEO. Satya emphasized the company’s mission, stating, “Data teams shouldn’t have to choose between speed, cost, and openness.” Qbeast’s platform is designed for seamless integration with existing compute engines such as Spark, Databricks, Snowflake, DuckDB, and Polars, eliminating the need for extensive pipeline rewrites or changes to the underlying storage layer.

Microsoft is also advancing its integration of AI into its business intelligence tools. The company plans to enable the standalone Copilot experience in Power BI by default for all tenants where Copilot is already active, starting on or after September 5, 2025. This move underscores Microsoft’s commitment to embedding AI-powered assistance directly into its analytics platforms to enhance user experience and decision-making capabilities.
