Amazon Web Services (AWS) is aggressively pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence, particularly in the realm of agentic AI, which the company’s leadership views as the ‘next frontier in computing.’ This strategic focus is underscored by new product announcements, substantial investments, and a clear vision for how autonomous AI systems will reshape enterprise operations.
At the AWS Summit in New York in July 2025, Swami Sivasubramanian, AWS VP for Agentic AI, highlighted the profound impact of AI agents—autonomous software systems that leverage AI to reason, plan, and adapt to complete complex tasks. Sivasubramanian stated that this represents a ‘tectonic change’ that will dramatically accelerate innovation and improve productivity across every industry. He emphasized that it ‘upends the way software is built,’ introduces new deployment and operational challenges, and fundamentally alters how software interacts with the world and how humans interact with software.
Central to AWS’s agentic AI strategy is Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, a comprehensive suite of services designed to enable organizations to deploy and operate highly capable AI agents securely at enterprise scale, regardless of the underlying framework or model. This initiative aims to address the critical challenge enterprises face in building systems that can act autonomously across digital boundaries while maintaining robust security and operational integrity.
Further demonstrating its commitment, AWS announced an additional $100 million investment in the AWS Generative AI Innovation Center. This funding builds on two years of the center’s work in empowering thousands of customers globally to boost productivity and transform customer experiences through generative AI. Additionally, a new ‘AI Agents and Tools’ category in AWS Marketplace has been unveiled, simplifying the discovery, purchase, deployment, and management of AI agents and tools from leading providers, thereby fast-tracking enterprise AI initiatives.
While AWS is making significant strides, the broader industry acknowledges that agentic AI is still in its nascent stages of widespread, meaningful adoption. Accenture’s research, presented at the 2025 AWS Summit, indicates that while 83% of enterprises are piloting generative AI, only 13% have realized substantial business value. This highlights a maturity curve that requires careful navigation, balancing innovation with operational realities. Key barriers to scaling enterprise AI include data readiness, responsible AI considerations, integration complexity across diverse IT stacks, a persistent skills gap, and the rapid pace of innovation itself.

Despite these challenges, the long-term outlook for agentic AI remains optimistic. Gartner predicts that by 2028, at least 15% of day-to-day work decisions will be made autonomously through agentic AI, a significant leap from near zero in 2024. AWS’s proactive approach, including forming a dedicated Agentic AI business group led by Sivasubramanian, positions the company to lead this transformative wave, building the necessary infrastructure before enterprises fully realize the extent of their need, much like its pioneering efforts in cloud adoption and containerization.
