Meta Secures $29 Billion Financing for Major AI Data Center Expansion in Louisiana

TLDR: Meta Platforms has finalized a $29 billion financing deal with PIMCO and Blue Owl Capital to fund its extensive AI data center expansion in rural Louisiana. PIMCO will provide $26 billion in debt, while Blue Owl Capital will contribute $3 billion in equity, marking a significant strategic move to bolster Meta’s artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Meta Platforms Inc. has successfully secured a substantial $29 billion financing package, tapping into the private credit market to fuel its ambitious artificial intelligence data center expansion.

The deal sees Pacific Investment Management Co. (PIMCO) and alternative asset manager Blue Owl Capital Inc. leading the funding initiative for Meta’s new facilities in rural Louisiana. PIMCO is set to manage the larger portion of the financing, providing $26 billion in debt, which is anticipated to be issued in the form of bonds. Blue Owl Capital will complement this with a $3 billion equity contribution. This strategic capital structuring is designed to support Meta’s significant investment in AI infrastructure without heavily diluting shareholder value.

The move underscores Meta’s aggressive push into the AI domain, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously outlining plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into building massive AI data centers for the company’s superintelligence unit. Meta is recognized as one of the “AI hyperscalers” on Wall Street, a group of leading tech firms committing vast resources to develop advanced AI infrastructure. The company had previously indicated a projected spend of $66 billion to $72 billion on AI in 2025, with potential for further increases in 2026.

In addition to this financing, Meta is also exploring co-development strategies, including the potential offloading of approximately $2 billion in data center assets, to share the substantial costs associated with building facilities for generative AI. While Meta, PIMCO, and Blue Owl Capital have not publicly commented on the deal, reports indicate that Bloomberg News was the first to break the story. Morgan Stanley was reportedly involved in the fundraising process, with other major firms like Apollo Global Management and KKR also considered for a lead role in the negotiations.
