Harvey, a prominent San Francisco-based generative artificial intelligence (AI) scaleup, is expanding its global footprint by establishing a new hub in Toronto, Canada, slated to open in October. This strategic move aims to bolster the company’s growth within the Canadian market and support its broader product development initiatives. Harvey, which develops and sells domain-specific AI tools tailored for law firms and professional service providers, plans to hire more than 20 professionals for engineering, sales, and customer success roles in the city by early next year.
The decision to choose Toronto was driven by the city’s strong engineering talent pool, esteemed academic institutions, and vibrant AI community, signaling a long-term investment in the Canadian market. Winston Weinberg, co-founder and CEO of Harvey, emphasized the company’s commitment, stating, ‘Canada is not just a market for Harvey, it’s a place we’re thrilled to be building in.’ Siva Gurumurthy of Harvey also noted the significant opportunity in Canada’s legal technology space, acknowledging the presence of strong local players.
Founded in 2022 by Weinberg, a former securities and antitrust litigator, and Gabriel Pereya, an ex-Google DeepMind researcher, Harvey has rapidly grown, most recently achieving a valuation of $5 billion USD. The company’s AI platform is designed to assist lawyers in automating and completing complex, recurring legal tasks by leveraging advanced large-language models. Its software streamlines critical processes such as contract analysis, due diligence, compliance, and litigation. Furthermore, Harvey’s technology enables firms to securely collaborate on projects and extract valuable insights from both proprietary and public legal sources. While primarily focused on the legal sector, Harvey is also expanding into adjacent professional services, including a co-development project for a mergers and acquisitions platform with PwC.
The company differentiates itself through its commitment to security and customization, rapid product development, strong relationships with leading model providers, and a focus on AI quality optimized by legal domain experts. Harvey’s platform is built on a version of OpenAI’s GPT AI, further trained with extensive general legal data and can be fine-tuned with a firm’s own work products and templates for enhanced contextual accuracy. The legal technology sector has recently experienced a boom, with funding for startups surging, largely attributed to the transformative impact of AI.
