TLDR: GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke has issued a stark warning to developers globally: adopt artificial intelligence tools or risk becoming irrelevant. He predicts that AI could automate up to 90% of coding within the next five years, emphasizing a shift towards AI-assisted workflows and creative problem-solving.
In a significant address reflecting the rapidly evolving landscape of software development, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke has strongly advised developers worldwide to integrate artificial intelligence tools into their workflows, cautioning that failure to do so could lead to obsolescence. Dohmke’s remarks underscore the accelerating adoption of generative AI tools, such as GitHub Copilot, into mainstream programming practices.
Speaking on what he terms a ‘new era of AI-assisted coding,’ Dohmke shared insights from a recent blog post titled ‘Developers, Reinvented.’ This post presented findings from a GitHub survey of 22 developers who regularly utilize AI coding assistants. The survey indicated that developers leveraging AI spend considerably less time on repetitive coding tasks, freeing them to focus on more creative and high-impact activities like architecture design and complex problem-solving.
GitHub Copilot, powered by OpenAI’s Codex model, has seen remarkable adoption since its launch in 2021. As of 2025, over 1.8 million developers are reportedly using Copilot daily, spanning both enterprise and individual users. Dohmke stressed that embracing AI is now crucial for maintaining competitiveness within the software industry. He articulated his vision for the future developer, stating, ‘The developer of the future is not a code-typist. They are the creative director of code.’
Dohmke further cited research suggesting that a staggering 90% of code writing could be automated by AI tools within the next half-decade. While acknowledging the continued value of traditional programming knowledge, he argued that developers must pivot their skills towards prompt engineering, quality control, system design, and proficient AI-assisted workflows. GitHub’s internal data also indicates that AI tools contribute to reduced time-to-commit and enhanced developer satisfaction.

The growing influence of AI is also prompting discussions about necessary changes in computer science education. Dohmke encouraged educational institutions, including universities and bootcamps, to train students on how to collaborate with AI tools rather than compete against them. The ultimate goal, he noted, is to cultivate ‘AI-native developers’ who are well-equipped for the demands of the real world. GitHub itself has launched various initiatives to promote responsible AI use, including supporting open-source projects, establishing ethical coding guidelines, and ensuring transparency in the attribution of AI-generated code.
