IBM and AWS Deepen Collaboration to Advance Responsible Generative AI

TLDR: IBM and AWS are strengthening their partnership to help businesses responsibly adopt generative AI, focusing on transparency, security, and trust. This collaboration includes making IBM’s Granite models available on Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker, enhancing AI governance with watsonx.governance, and introducing new security and observability tools.

IBM and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are significantly expanding their collaboration to accelerate the responsible adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) across enterprises. Announced during AWS re:Invent in November 2024, this partnership aims to provide businesses with the tools and frameworks necessary to harness generative AI with an emphasis on transparency, security, and trust.

At the core of this enhanced alliance is the integration of IBM’s enterprise-grade Granite series of foundation models with AWS platforms. These high-performing and cost-efficient Granite models are now accessible on Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker JumpStart, including the latest Granite 3.0 models tailored for specific business needs. Furthermore, IBM Granite models now support AWS Neuron, enabling deep learning on Inferentia and Trainium-based instances, with future plans for Trainium2 integration.

Recognizing the critical need for trust and security in AI, IBM and AWS have developed several governance and observability tools. IBM watsonx.governance, already integrated with Amazon SageMaker, offers a comprehensive framework for managing the entire AI model lifecycle, including customizable risk assessment and model approval workflows. IBM Guardium AI Security is also available on the AWS Marketplace, assisting clients in discovering AI deployments, ensuring regulatory compliance, and protecting sensitive data. For seamless operations, IBM Instana Generative AI Observability provides full-stack observability for AI applications on Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker, complete with automated resource optimization.

Innovative new capabilities are also being previewed, including IBM Concert, a generative AI-driven insights tool for operational excellence across AWS platforms, expected in early 2025. Additionally, IBM Autonomous Security for Cloud (ASC), an AI-powered cloud security management solution leveraging Amazon Bedrock for enhanced decision-making, is set to launch globally in December 2024.

Chris Grusz, Managing Director, Technology Partnerships, AWS, stated, “IBM is one of our largest partners for both technology and consulting, and together we are at the forefront of enabling the democratization of AI.” He added that IBM is prioritizing integration with AWS at every layer of the AI stack, making it easier for mutual customers to choose the technology that best fits their needs and benefit from responsible AI.
