Google Expands Agent2Agent Protocol Across Cloud Services, Bolstering AI Agent Interoperability

Google has announced a major expansion of its Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol, integrating it more deeply into its cloud services to foster a more interconnected ecosystem for AI agents and applications. This strategic move, revealed on July 31, 2025, is designed to streamline communication and enhance integration capabilities across the Google Cloud platform.

The A2A protocol, initially launched in early April 2025 to enable AI agents to communicate with each other, has rapidly gained traction. Google subsequently donated the protocol to the Linux Foundation, and it now boasts the support of over 150 companies, including industry giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce, and ServiceNow.

This latest expansion sees Google adding native A2A support to a range of its agent-centric and adjacent developer tools and services. Key integrations include the Agent Development Kit (ADK), Agentspace (Google’s no-code agent builder for enterprises), and Agent Engine. Furthermore, new deployment options are being introduced, making it simpler to deploy A2A agents to Cloud Run or the Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).

The goal of this initiative is to empower developers to build, deploy, evaluate, and sell A2A agents more effectively within Google Cloud. The release of version 0.3 of the A2A protocol brings a more stable interface, crucial for accelerating enterprise adoption. This version introduces capabilities such as gRPC support, the ability to sign security cards, and extended client-side support in the Python SDK, offering greater flexibility, enhanced security, and easier integration.

According to Google, many customers are moving beyond experimental phases with agents and A2A into production environments, necessitating easier deployment and robust monitoring tools. The enhanced A2A system evaluation, extending the Vertex GenAI Evaluation Service, will enable rigorous testing for emergent behaviors, conversational integrity, and goal completion in complex, multi-agent scenarios.

The expansion aligns with modern DevOps practices, prioritizing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) by automating interactions between applications, which can lead to faster deployment cycles and improved software quality. Companies like Tyson Foods and Gordon Food Service are already leveraging collaborative A2A systems to drive sales and reduce supply chain friction, creating real-time channels for agents to share product data and leads. Adobe is also utilizing the A2A protocol to ensure interoperability between its distributed agents and those within Google Cloud’s ecosystem, aiming to create new digital experiences and streamline content creation workflows.
