TLDR: OpenAI’s ChatGPT has rapidly transformed into a mainstream daily application, with its usage metrics now rivaling and even surpassing major social media platforms and traditional search engines. Data from July 2025 indicates a significant increase in daily prompts, user engagement, and a diversification of its application into lifestyle and entertainment, solidifying its position as a leading mobile consumer app.
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has firmly established itself as a ‘daily app,’ moving beyond a mere technological trend. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, in particular, has demonstrated remarkable growth, now competing directly with established tech giants across various key metrics, including average days of use, session duration, and platform scalability.
According to a Sensor Tower report released on July 31, 2025, ChatGPT’s global monthly average days of use reached 13.2 days in the second quarter of this year. This positions it as a key application, ranking just below Google (18.6 days) and notably surpassing major social apps such as Reddit (12.2 days) and Threads (9.5 days). Its usage frequency is nearly on par with X (formerly Twitter) at 13.7 days. The average daily usage time for ChatGPT has also climbed to 16 minutes, narrowing the gap with search and browser apps (18.2 minutes) to a mere 2.2 minutes. This marks a significant increase from mid-2023, when ChatGPT’s average monthly days of use was approximately 5 days, indicating a rapid surge in user loyalty comparable to that of X.
OpenAI reports that ChatGPT now handles around 2.5 billion user prompts daily as of July 2025, a substantial increase from 1 billion daily queries reported in December of the previous year. Of this total, approximately 330 million prompts originate from users in the United States. The platform draws an estimated 180 million individual visits per day and recorded approximately 4.6 billion total visits in May alone, placing it among the five most visited websites globally. OpenAI also states that it has around 500 million active users each week, with about 10 million paid subscribers.
ChatGPT’s increasing integration into daily online habits is beginning to shift attention from traditional search engines. While Google remains dominant, ChatGPT’s daily prompt volume now rivals nearly a fifth of Google’s global search volume, which processes around 14 billion searches per day. Unlike traditional search engines, ChatGPT’s ability to engage in full dialogue appeals to users seeking faster, more personalized responses.
Beyond simple information retrieval and writing assistance, the scope of ChatGPT’s application is rapidly expanding. In the second quarter of 2025, over one-third of prompts entered into ChatGPT were focused on lifestyle and entertainment areas, including healthcare, financial management, shopping, and cooking. This expansion signifies its evolution into a tool providing personalized advice and real-life services. Usage paths have also diversified, with over 15% of U.S. ChatGPT users simultaneously utilizing both mobile and web versions, a higher figure compared to platforms like Temu and Threads.
Sensor Tower highlights that the increasing weekend usage rate of ChatGPT indicates its adoption as a major tool in daily life beyond just work, mirroring Google’s usage patterns across weekdays and weekends. Among generative AI applications, ChatGPT leads in in-app revenue in most countries, excluding China. The tool currently holds over 60 percent of the global market share for AI-powered platforms. Its initial growth was unprecedented, reaching 1 million users in just 5 days and 100 million monthly active users in two months, significantly faster than TikTok (9 months) and Instagram (2.5 years).

A Pew Research Center survey from June 2025 revealed that about a third of American adults have used ChatGPT, with 58% of adults under 30 being users. The survey also noted that 28% of employed adults use AI tools at work, 26% use them to learn something new, and 22% for entertainment. The overall market for generative AI apps, including ChatGPT, continues to experience rapid growth, solidifying AI’s role as an indispensable part of modern digital life.
